Select how often (in days) to receive an alert: Posting Date: 7 Apr 2025 City: Roma Location: Roma, IT, 131 Contract Type: Permanent Division: Digital Technology and Cybersecurity Level of experience: RINA is currently recruiting for a Junior Aerospace Engineer to join its office in ROME within the Digital Technology and Cybersecurity Division. Mission Developer and integrator of systems for the control and communication of drone swarms in safe and supervised testing environments. This role involves working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the highest level of performance, reliability, and safety in our aerospace technologies. Key Accountabilities Design and Development: Support the development of a software/hardware environment for safe and intuitive control of drone swarms during flight tests. Implement basic drone functionalities: takeoff, landing, position hold, emergency landing, and obstacle avoidance. Enable secure rapid prototyping of external navigation algorithms (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink) with supervision to prevent unsafe commands. Testing and Validation: Assist in testing control algorithms and safety mechanisms for supervised external commands. Conduct simulated and real flight tests to assess system stability and swarm behavior. Analyze performance data to ensure safety and robustness in dynamic scenarios. Work with engineers and network specialists to integrate flight control with the Ground Control Station (GCS). Contribute to design reviews and protocol refinement. Support evaluation of WiFi and MANET networks for drone communication. Maintenance and Upgrades: Help refine the system based on test feedback and implement functional upgrades. Integrate new algorithms and ensure compatibility with evolving interfaces and standards. Communication Protocols and Networking: Develop and test communication protocols for intra-swarm and GCS interaction. Identify MANET limitations in node discovery and swarm formation. Document results and suggest improvements for scalability and reliability. Documentation and Training: Prepare technical documentation, user manuals, and training materials. Support demonstrations and knowledge transfer to users and stakeholders. Education Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering Qualifications Basic understanding of flight simulation systems and aircraft control systems. Familiarity with industry standards and safety regulations. Experience with programming languages such as MATLAB, Simulink, C++, or Python. OPEN A1-A31 certification or be available to obtain it. Experience and aptitude to work with drones and related hardware (considered a plus). Knowledge of the PX4 drone control software, ROS, navigation and guidance algorithms and sensors (considered a plus). Good knowledge of the English language.
