Job Description

Senior Manager Engineering Our client, a leader in nuclear engineering and isotope applications, is seeking a Senior Manager, Engineering to work out of their Oakville or Oshawa offices. This is a permanent, full-time position, offering a base salary between 130-170k, an annual bonus program targeted at 15%, 4 weeks’ paid vacation, a 35-hour work week, competitive pension matching and a medium-term incentive plan of 15% after three years of employment. The successful candidate will have 10 years’ relevant work experience, with a minimum of 3-4 years in a managerial role, ideally within the nuclear industry, and will be a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.). This role will be partially office-based but also requires regular travel (minimum once weekly) to the client site in Bowmanville, Ontario. Our client's operational strategy aims to pursue innovative commercial growth opportunities by providing medical isotopes and radio pharmaceuticals, nuclear sustainability solutions, inspections, engineering services, ageing management, commercial grade dedication assessment, single point vulnerability (SPV) assessments, de-tritiation, decommissioning, refurbishment, nuclear safety analysis and other services to the low carbon energy industry. Job Function: Manage a department providing power equipment-related engineering expertise. Develop engineering governance for electrical and mechanical equipment engineering applications and provide oversight in support of the Director, Engineering. Job Duties: Within the terms of reference and context provided by the Director, Engineering and through collateral relationships with peers the Senior Manager, Engineering is accountable for the following: Act as owners engineer as required; provide engineering input, participation, advice, guidance and oversight to ensure the external purchased products and services meet Hydro-Thermal's design, construction, operation, maintenance, and safety (COMS) quality and standards requirements. Act as 'smart buyers' in prescribing equipment requirements, procurement, and undertaking quality assurance inspections as required. Act as Subject Matter Experts (SME's). All references to due diligence include the following key elements associated with due diligence as described below: Carry out engineering oversight of work by others in support of the Director, Plant Engineering Services function. Carry out engineering work as agreed in support of HTO and other business units and projects. Carry out or participate in PFCA as agreed with the Plant Groups. Conduct performance reviews and development plans for assigned staff. Continuously improve and strengthen the technical capability of the group and cost effectiveness of operation. Dam Safety (DS) Program Develop and maintain the necessary standards, procedures and managed systems on behalf of HTO. Develop and update DS Procedures and Standards. Develop engineering governance, quality standards, processes in support of the development of the HTO Quality Engineering System (an engineering infrastructure). Direct supervision of staff that are embedded in the Hydro-Thermal plants across the province. Directs programs to ensure achievement of strategies and objectives and compliance with law and corporate requirements. Electrical Engineering - Provision of expert support related to hydro & thermal generators, power transformers and breakers, rotating exciters, grounding and protections, static exciters/voltage regulators, metering, govern controls and market compliance including cyber security. Interface with internal and external organizations/bodies, regulators and agencies that influence HTO and selected LEP activities (e.g. Regulatory Affairs, Energy Markets, ESA, Hydro One). Engineering Governance and Oversight Ensure that all Corporate and HTO policies are adhered to and followed; in particular those related to Health & Safety, HR, Finance, Commercial operation, Code of Business Conduct and due diligence. Hydro/Thermal Plant Groups Support Identifies risks, hazards or contravention. Initiate, develop and coordinate the programs and activities of engineering nature to achieve due diligence and regulatory compliance. Knows and complies with legal requirements, Corporate, policies and procedures, and generally accepted practices. Maintain an engineering team with a high degree of expertise to provide the needed advice on state-of-the-art technology and to address complex technical problems. Maintains proper documentation. Mechanical Engineering - Provision of expert services related to hydraulic turbines, sluice and head gates, valves, piping, and mechanical systems related to the generation of power and field NDT. Interface with applicable external organizations, regulators and agencies on behalf of HTO. Monitor, develop and implement departmental objectives including AIPs aligned with those of the division. Monitors and assesses results of tasks/programs to ensure achievement of objectives and takes action to address deficiencies. Monitors staff performance and compliance with laws and company policies. Participate in plant commissioning. Perform 'smart buyer' role and provide oversight functions in support of Plant Facilities Condition Assessment Program. Perform specialty inspections and failure assessments. Respond to equipment incidents and follow ups. Plans and sets strategies and objectives with superiors and is accountable where applicable for the work of subordinates. Plant Facilities Condition Assessments (PFCA) Project Support Provide DS and associated training. Provide expert advice to Plant Groups on PFCA Program. Provide expertise advice on strategic mechanical and electrical equipment requirements and performance. Provide input to divisional plans, strategies, programs and processes. Provide leadership in organizing Engineering Workshops and other training functions. Provide responses to internal and external investigations and audits. Provide support for DS emergencies. Support Dam Safety Periodic Reviews and Failure Modes Analysis projects. Support Director, Dam Safety and Director, Plant Engineering Services in oversight function. Support project planning through problem/needs identifications, concept studies, project initiation and project scoping and requirements. Takes steps to ensure that proper management and internal control systems for his/her responsibility are in place and working effectively. Take steps to protect the company's assets. Where applicable, ensures subordinates are competent as required by law.
