Job Description

Job Title: Assistant Marine/ Maintenance Engineer Role Purpose: The Assistant Engineer is responsible for planning and executing maintenance and requirements for all vessels, servicing, and supporting systems. The goal is to maintain, improve, and ensure vessels are operational throughout changing seasonal demands. The role involves taking an active interest in the company's success, implementing ongoing positive changes within the maintenance schedule, and ensuring standards are continually met. The Assistant Engineer will ensure all boats are ready for service as per schedule demands, maintaining excellent onboard standards. Key Responsibilities: Routine Maintenance: Perform engine servicing, fuel filter changes, gear oil changes, and maintenance of fixtures, fittings, and electrics. Support weekly boat checks, record paperwork, and file at Monday maintenance meetings. Ensure helm equipment, AIS, and VHF systems are in good working order. Maintain boarding platforms, seats, and surrounding areas. Secure A-frame and D-bolts, maintain mooring lines, and check/bleed steering systems. Carry out repairs promptly to ensure vessels are ready for service. Weekly Duties: Conduct Monday morning sweeps of vessels to clear low-priority and minor defects. Test all engines, gears, controls, and parts, ensuring props are not damaged. Plan, action, and prevent excess water in hulls. Ensure steps are secure, boats are clean, and bilge pumps are empty. Liaise with the Head of Operations on vessel availability to satisfy bookings with the maintenance schedule. Ensure maintenance store boxes are clean, clear, and logically ordered for effective Friday boat checks. Keep a backup boat ready for service in case of breakdown. Perform thorough Friday boat checks to maintain an immaculate fleet both mechanically and aesthetically. Emergency Maintenance: Conduct short-notice maintenance and repairs to ensure vessels remain operational. Organize engine changes and major component changes with official engineers. Oversee Southdock and all supporting partners and parts to ensure job completion. Suppliers & Contractors: Maintain relationships with suppliers, engineers, fabricators, and contractors. Pre-order and have all tools and equipment on-site for specialist use. Organize relevant lifts and holds to ensure efficient use of time with boats out of water. Support external works and ensure they are fully completed before authorizing the vessel back into the river. Approve maintenance invoices with the company's interests in mind. Servicing: Ensure all equipment is in date, serviced, and replaced, including first aid kits, lifejackets, PLBs, fire extinguishers, crew/passenger kits, emergency equipment, generators, and tools. Research, implement, and action legal requirements surrounding emergency equipment. Health and Safety: Raise any observations via the online reporting platform. Promote best practice procedures to others on-site. Always follow H&S protocol, never jeopardizing personal safety to complete tasks.
