No Offer Description Pre-doctoral researcher (PhD position) under the framework of the MSCA TRAMPOLINe project: Position DC9 TRAMPOLINe is a joint academic-industrial interdisciplinary European initiative which has the primary goal of training a pool of young researchers in the field of microbial electrochemical technologies (METs) while developing innovative and ready-to-be-applied solutions for global environmental challenges that currently endanger the health and well-being of people worldwide and cause significant pressure to the economy. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 101167647. TRAMPOLINe integrates 10 different PhD positions within the framework of microbial electrochemical technologies (please refer to the TRAMPOLINe LinkedIn page (TRAMPOLINE_MSCA) to learn about the rest of the positions). IMPORTANT STATEMENT: Each candidate should apply for a maximum of 4 different DC positions that are more suitable for their profile. The goal of this PhD Project (DC9) is to develop (at the lab-scale) and validate (at field-scale) novel soil and groundwater electro-bioremediation processes. Specifically, a main focus will be the development of strategies to promote long-distance electron transfer (LDET) in subsurface environments using conductive (nano)materials and minerals as a strategy to improve (electricity-driven) contaminants removal. Key to this research will also be the characterization and optimization of the microbiomes most suited to this MET process. This research will be carried out at the Water Research Institute (IRSA) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). The candidate will pursue the PhD degree in Chemical Processes for the Industry and the Environment from Sapienza University of Rome under the scientific supervision of Federico Aulenta. Secondary supervision will be performed by Ilaria Pietrini from ENI and Jo Philips from Aarhus University (DK), who will host secondments. INTENDED STARTING DATE: September/October 2025. Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but have not yet been formally awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible. Recruited researchers must be enrolled in a doctoral programme at Sapienza University of Rome, leading to the award of a doctoral degree, after signing the contract. Chemical and Biochemical Engineers are preferred for this position, although related degrees such as Chemistry, Environmental Technology, and Biotechnology are also acceptable. The doctoral candidate should also hold a Master’s degree in one of the abovementioned subjects, with those related to Electrochemistry being the most suitable. Specific Requirements: Research experience in the field of bioelectrochemistry and bioremediation, as well as in employing state-of-the-art analytical techniques (e.g., Gas chromatography, Ion chromatography, Total Organic Carbon Analysis, Mass-spectrometry) will be considered as an added-value. Languages: ENGLISH Level: Excellent ITALIAN Level: Basic Additional Information The employment contract for the doctoral candidate will include a gross salary (living, mobility, and family allowance) according to the unit contribution given in the Work Programme 2023 for Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions.
