Job Description
Civil, Computer Science and Aeronautical Technologies Engineering Organisation/Company: Roma Tre University Department Civil, Computer Science and Aeronautical Technologies Engineering Research Field: Engineering » Materials engineering Researcher Profile: First Stage Researcher (R1) Positions: PhD Positions Country: Italy Application Deadline: 7 Jul 2025 - 07:00 (Europe/Brussels) Type of Contract: Temporary Job Status: Full-time Offer Starting Date: 1 Jan 2025 Is the job funded through the EU Research Framework Programme? Not funded by a EU programme Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure? No Offer Description The emerging electrification and fuel cell technology sectors require ongoing basic research activities concerning advanced materials and related analysis techniques. In particular, mechanical and microstructural characterization methods are becoming increasingly relevant for correctly evaluating process-microstructure-property correlations in heterogeneous materials (such as nanocomposites for battery electrodes and/or membranes and thin films used in hydrogen fuel cell systems). In this doctoral project, the student will develop, in close collaboration with the company, new methods for multi-scale and multi-technique characterization of advanced and sustainable materials for the automotive sector, essentially based on the combined use of nanoindentation techniques and focused ion beam (FIB) microscopy. The expected impact of this project is of utmost importance to the company, as the development of new high-resolution material characterization methods can significantly reduce the commercialization times of advanced products while also contributing to the reduction of environmental impact. Minimum Requirements Education: Master's degree (MSC) in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Experimental Physics, or a related field. Language Skills: Fluent in written and spoken English (at least C1). Specific Requirements Advanced skills in Python and Matlab programming (knowledge focused on NumPy). Knowledgeable in structural mechanics, with experience in Abaqus software (or other Finite Element Modelling software). Familiarity with advanced characterization techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy, Focused Ion Beam, Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and nanoindentation. Familiarity with materials science data analysis, particularly in contact mechanics and big data analysis for mechanical characterization. Proficient in data analysis and machine learning, mainly mechanical data analysis. Languages: ENGLISH Level Excellent Additional Information The candidate will receive training in nanomechanical testing, particularly in nanoindentation and microscopy techniques. Selection process The selection of candidates will undergo a pre-screening conducted by the leaders of the Materials Science and Technology group. Subsequently, the selection process involves the participation of the shortlisted candidates in a public competition, during which the evaluation committee (including external members from the department's doctoral committee) will assess the candidate's project proposal in line with the specified topic and make the final decision.
