Opening Full Time 40 hours Range URG 110 LLE-Laboratory for Laser Energetics Schedule 8:30 AM-5:30 PM Responsibilities POSITION SUMMARY: The NSF-OPAL team at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics seeks a Senior Optical Engineer to support the design of NSF OPAL, a new state-of-the art laser user facility with two new 25-PW lasers coupled to OMEGA EP to achieve and study extreme physical conditions. The candidate will help evolve this project from conceptual design to final design. This position is in the Compression and Transport sub-system, involving the conditioning, transport, focusing, and diagnosis of meter-scale beams. RESPONSIBILITIES: Optical modeling and design of broadband laser systems Analysis and design of laser diagnostics (wavefront, spectrum, precision alignment, etc.) Project management coordinating a diverse support team of laser, mechanical, controls, and software engineers Develop project requirements, schedules, and budgets Communicate results through formal design reviews Develop innovative solutions to difficult design challenges QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in Optics or related Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics field and 3 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience ESSENTIAL SKILLS: Proficiency in optical modeling software (Zemax OpticStudio, CODE V) Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn additional software operation Excellent verbal and written communication Strong interpersonal skills working in a team-based environment PREFERRED SKILLS: Experience with optical fabrication and metrology processes, particularly large optics Experience with opto-mechanical, electrical, controls, vacuum systems Other software experience: Matlab, C++, SQL, Python Experience with FRED optical engineering software The University of Rochester is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion to advance the University’s mission to Learn, Discover, Heal, Create — and Make the World Ever Better.
