BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), as the world’s largest humanitarian agency, is well known for its ability to deliver food assistance rapidly to people in need. Several factors (climate change, pandemics, conflicts, etc.) are exacerbating human suffering, damaging livelihoods, ecosystems and resources availability. Humanitarian actors are responsible to embed sustainability in their interventions both in terms of reducing possible collateral damages and increasing the resilience of the supply systems to such stressing factors, to maintain the ability to deliver at the right time and place. Enhancing ESG sustainability and resilience of WFP supply chain is essential to ensure the organization can continue to deliver on its mandate and be accountable to the people we serve. Under the supervision of the Head of Sustainable Supply Chain unit, the incumbent will analyse and research work related to enhancing sustainability and resilience of supply chain. The output of the assignment will feed into the objective to design WFP Supply Chain strategy for 2030 and beyond. The consultant is expected to be familiar with those areas of engagement. The consultant will provide operational support to the field that involves designing, planning, and implementing Supply Chain (SC) systems sustainability and resilience activities based on local and national context and feasibility. ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: To address the context above, SSC Unit is providing support to RBs/COs strategy definition and implementation. The incumbent will: Provide support within assigned regions, following up on the design and rollout of regional environmental strategies, and support the implementation of supply chain sustainability projects, plans and processes, ensuring alignment with wider programme policies and guidance while gaining and then imbuing a systems-thinking approach. Ensure ESG and resilience considerations are embedded in CSPs for the assigned regions. Identify and establish relationships with key internal and external stakeholders who are owners of data and analyses in various areas of interest such as environmental sustainability, climate change, supply chain routes and crop patterns. Conduct in-depth research on trends and solutions to enhance supply chain sustainability, from the humanitarian and development fields, academia and private sector, and how these can be applied to WFP operations; produce clear and concise analysis documents outlining the conclusions of the research and proposed way forward for solutions’ implementation. Plan and manage implementation of innovative supply chain operations, initiatives and services in the sustainability and resilience areas, in close cooperation with key supply chain stakeholders. DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT: Strategies and projects designed and delivered. COs and regions supported in sustainability/resilience activities and initiatives. Supply chain sustainability and resilience embedded in CSPs as relevant. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Education and experience: Advanced University degree in Business Administration, Economy, Strategy, International Development, International Relations, or other field relevant to international development assistance, or First University Degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses. 2 or more years of professional experience related to implementation of sustainability in supply chains, related policies, strategies or plans; Some knowledge of key national and regional contexts and issues is desirable; Previous experience working in WFP, International Organisations and/or UN organisation desirable. Languages: Fluency (level C) in English language. Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second language French, Spanish, and/or Italian is highly desirable.
