No Offer Description Our group will study an enzyme (urate oxidase, UOX) that degrades uric acid without external cofactors. Over the course of evolution, UOX has disappeared in humans, and it is often administered therapeutically for conditions that involve elevated uric acid levels (e.g., gout). Our approach to studying the enzymatic activation of molecular oxygen without cofactors addresses the complex nature of biological catalysis in a comprehensive manner, examining the most elusive atomic properties in combination with the most advanced and modern methodologies in structural biology.
