Job Description

The Indirect Tax and Custom Manager is responsible for overseeing Custom and VAT compliance, ensuring accurate and timely tax filings, and managing customs processes to facilitate efficient and cost-effective international trade operations. This role requires a strong understanding of tax regulations, customs laws, and international trade agreements. Key Responsibilities: VAT Compliance: Ensure timely and accurate preparation and submission of VAT returns, Intrastat reports, and EC Sales Lists for Italian companies. Manage VAT registration, deregistration, and audits across multiple jurisdictions. Monitor changes in VAT laws and regulations, assessing their impact on the business. Implement VAT compliance strategies and processes to minimize risk to the business. Customs Management: Oversee all customs-related activities, including import/export documentation, classification of goods (Harmonized System Codes), and ensuring compliance with customs regulations. Act as a liaison with customs authorities, freight forwarders, and other external bodies. Manage duty relief schemes (e.g., bonded warehouses, inward processing relief) to optimize cost savings. Handle customs clearance for shipments, ensuring minimal delays in supply chain operations. Advisory and Strategy: Provide strategic advice on VAT and customs matters to senior management and cross-functional teams. Assess VAT and customs implications of new business ventures, acquisitions, or geographic expansions. Collaborate with finance and logistics teams to ensure VAT and customs processes align with business goals. Audit and Risk Management: Coordinate internal and external audits related to VAT and customs processes. Conduct regular reviews of VAT and customs records to identify and mitigate compliance risks. Ensure proper record-keeping of VAT transactions and customs declarations for audit purposes. Process Improvement: Develop and implement efficient processes and controls to streamline VAT and customs operations. Ensure that ERP systems are configured to support accurate VAT reporting and customs declarations. Provide training and guidance to staff on VAT and customs compliance. Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong relationships with internal departments (Finance, Supply Chain, Legal) to ensure integrated VAT and customs processes. Manage relationships with tax authorities, customs officials, and external advisors to resolve disputes or inquiries. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Law, or a related field. Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in VAT and customs management, including exposure to international trade and cross-border tax issues. Professional certification in tax or customs (e.g., CTA, CIOT) is a plus. Strong knowledge of VAT regulations, customs laws, and international trade agreements. Experience in managing VAT compliance and customs processes, ideally in a multinational company. Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle) and familiarity with VAT and customs reporting tools. Excellent communication and negotiation skills to liaise with authorities and internal stakeholders. Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
