Mechanical Project Engineer – Top Tier COMAH – Staff – Great Salary + Bonus + Benefits – County Durham
Our leading top-tier COMAH regulated client based in Teesside is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer on a staff basis. You will provide on-site engineering & management for projects across the sites operations, including technical support for the projects. Management of the working area and contractors, ensuring that specifications / design are being strictly followed and that work is proceeding safely and efficiently.
Role & Responsibilities:
• To demonstrate safety leadership on day-to-day activities by providing a high-profile presence on site and by conducting formal and informal auditing on a frequent basis, thereby ensuring that onsite contractors are fully executing and complying with the scope of work, site engineering & EHS standards and current legislation.
• Using your knowledge and experience to review constructability of projects at design phase so that installation factors are included within the detailed design, thereby saving time, material and money.
• Aiding the plant Engineers in reviewing and approving designs for projects, including adherence to Management of Change procedures.
• Working with manufacturers to ensure that new vessels, complex piping systems and valves are constructed in accordance with drawing, specifications and Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).
• Ensuring that all installation works being carried out are to the agreed site and industrial best practice standards, to identify any defects found for rectification by the Contractor and to ensure all defects are corrected in a timely manner.
• Supporting the selected contractor(s) in identifying conflicts and technical problems in construction progress, but without taking over the responsibility held by the contractor, to offer solutions or to communicate issues to project team for resolution.
• Overseeing site installation activities on a daily basis, including maintaining a log of key activities carried out. The role will include active leadership in weekly project meetings designed to coordinate the work and to feedback progress to the Project team including identification of slippage from the programme, EHS / quality problems and potential early warnings / variations.
• Prior to work starting – to ensure the contractor develops a programme of works, reviewing RAMS and other documentation provided by the contractor.
• During site works – to look ahead and liaise with the production teams to ensure that permit to works can be issued for future work and ensuring that the work is being carried out within the parameters of the permit.
• On completion of works – to review contractor cold test documentation, inspect the installation including identification of any defects.
• Managing communication to ensure key operational actions are progressed, tracked and audited.
• Managing smaller projects / modifications on behalf of the Project Manager, including control of budgets, cost variations and compensation events.
• Deputising for the Project Manager as and when required.
• Ensuring commercial awareness of work being carried out including a working understanding of specific Contract requirements.
Qualifications & Experience:
• Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent industry experience.
• Projects experience on a top-tier COMAH plant, ideally in the chemicals, refinery, power generation, oil & gas sectors or similar environment
• Willingness and ability to travel occasionally, visiting manufacturers of new equipment in the UK and Europe.
• Practical experience of mechanical installations (piping, steelwork, Mechanical fitter, civils), preferably within a COMAH environment
• A UK driving license
