Position : Safety Engineer Location : Turin Job Description : Within the RAMS service of the Quality Engineering, the activities are carried out under the primary responsibility of the head of service and consist to: Provide Safety engineering expertise and analysis in the development and implementation of Space products. Develop, maintain and implement a Safety programme plan for all project phases addressing the Safety requirements applicable to the project. Support the Nuclear Safety management Process definition applied to a Spacecraft using radioisotope. Nuclear Safety requirements evaluation and identification of actions to protect people and the environment in Earth’s biosphere from potential hazards due to the presence of radioisotope on the spacecraft. Perform Safety design, analysis, modeling and simulation to specify and verify that the Space products developed at Thales Alenia Space meet the customer requirements during the whole operational lifetime. Represent RAMS in technical meetings involving Safety-related issues. Participate in, influence and approve design decisions impacting or potentially impacting Safety. Attend the Program Design reviews for their respective Product and/or Project areas and provide evaluations & recommendations (RIDs). Review the Safety Analyses performed by subcontractors. Identify with adequate anticipation risks and opportunities and propose mitigation actions. Prepare subsystem & equipment Safety requirements for relative specifications, interface requirements and test requirements by analysing and decomposing customer requirements. Perform trade off evaluations in conjunction with other attributes such as mass, size, cost and performance to identify the product Safety engineering design choices with associated advantages and disadvantages. Evaluate the compliance of designs with Safety requirements by review of technical specifications, designs & design changes for both HW and SW, and suggest design alternatives where appropriate to enhance reliability based on a knowledge of design feasibility & the Safety requirements. Support the rationale for the selection of the design solution and the demonstration that the design meets the RAMS requirements by performing: Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA) with identification of Single Point Failure, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Hardware Software Interaction Analysis, Failure Detection Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) analysis, Availability/Outage Analysis, Maintainability Activities, Hazard Analysis in particular covering the Nuclear criticality risk. Ensure that Safety can be verified. Review of test documentation. Report directly to the RAMS Manager RAMS and work closely with other team members, both inside the RAMS team and from other functional teams, to meet the project objectives. Business Context: To provide “Safe designs” which meet specifications and budgets. To assure that all Safety risks including Nuclear aspects, associated with the design, development, production and operations of space product are adequately identified, assessed, minimized, controlled and finally accepted through the implementation of a safety assurance programme. To ensure that Product Design meets the customer requirements. To develop new and creative methods for analyzing equipment designs and problem-solving in order to identify effective design solutions to meet operational and dependability objectives. To work with others as a team member and to enhance the image of RAMS Engineering within the company and with our customers. To maintain high personal productivity while working interactively with many other suppliers and user groups. To keep up to date on new analysis techniques. To respect project deadlines. Competences: Experience on projects in the context of Safety & RAM assurance. Knowledge of design engineering in particular system design. Competence on RAMS Analysis methods. Competence on High-level Nuclear Safety requirements and Quantified Nuclear Safety goals. Knowledge of Radioisotope Energy design for significant relevant hazard identification and for setting criteria for Launch Site Safety Authorization.
