We are seeking a line leader to help manage the SMA Group within the Space Sector. As a member of our team, you'll collaborate with the SMA Group Supervisor, section supervisors as well as external partners within the lab. You will be joining a hardworking team of quality engineers and assurance specialists who are passionate about the value that the quality discipline brings to each project team. We are passionate about being integrated into a team yet applying independent decision making to ensure the best outcome for the Sector.
As the Assistant Group Supervisor, you will...
- Collaborate with the Group Supervisor in leading the SMA group, including hiring and staff planning, group and sector SMA policies, providing staff coaching and mentoring, planning group budgets, and representing the SMA group in various meetings and reviews.
- Participate in the development and execution of the group strategy and vision, including the development, modernization, and sustainment of core capabilities.
- Collaborate with the group supervisor in providing direction and oversight of ongoing technical efforts performed by the SMA group, including coordinating with SES program managers and other sector supervisors and staff. Ensure that the group meets all technical, programmatic, and quality commitments.
- Collaborate with the group supervisor in developing SMA estimates and technical proposals
- Contribute to the safety, quality, and mission assurance effort on a sponsored project or contribute to internally funded efforts performed by the SMA group (QMS, project SMA lead effort, audits, etc.)
- Collaborate with the group supervisor in closure of SMA related CPAS actions and continual improvement initiatives
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications if you have:
- A B.S. in engineering or related technical discipline with at least 5 years of senior roles in space programs engineering and management
- Prior supervisory experience of technical staff supporting space systems in either a line management or project lead role
- Experience in managing operating or staffing plans and budgets
- Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills
- Able to work collaboratively with other groups and with Sponsors in a positive and flexible manner using demonstrable technical, managerial, and professional judgement
- Extensive experience in AS9100, NASA, ANSI, IPC, and MIL requirements for space flight hardware
- Aptitude for effectively multitasking with a variety of different challenges
- Willing to help solve identified problems / resolve identified concerns
- The ability to obtain a Top Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You will go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have:
- A MS or PhD in engineering or related technical discipline
- Experience in Quality Management System development and management
- Extensive experience through the life cycle of multiple space flight missions at varying levels of classification/risk

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
