Senior Mechanical Engineer (Mechanical CRE) – West Midlands


£75k - £85k + Package



Job Summary:


We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer (CRE) to join a well-established principal contractor on a upgrade project in a Network Rail station. You will manage the engineering process from design to installation, testing, and commissioning, ensuring that all aspects meet HSE, quality, programme, and compliance standards. This role involves working closely with the construction team and liaising with key stakeholders, including Network Rail, to ensure the successful delivery of either Mechanical or Public Health systems.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Act as the Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE) in accordance with Network Rail standards

  • Lead a small engineering team to deliver the design, installation, and commissioning of Mechanical or Public Health systems

  • Review designs in compliance with HS2, NR, BS, EN, and ISO standards, ensuring buildability and constructability

  • Manage third-party design consultants and liaise with Network Rail and other stakeholders

  • Provide technical solutions, manage design documentation, and oversee BIM/CAD team

  • Attend interdisciplinary design reviews (IDR/IDC) and oversee clash detection

  • Manage subcontractor works and collaborate with the commercial and planning teams

  • Ensure compliance with quality management systems and health and safety standards


Person Specification:


Technical Knowledge and Skills:


Essential:



  • Strong knowledge of Mechanical or Public Health systems (e.g., HVAC, fire-rated ductwork, potable water, drainage systems)

  • Familiar with design and compliance processes

  • Proficient in MS Office and scheduling tools (MS Project or P6)

  • Knowledge of BIM standards and sustainability practices


Desired:



  • Experience with design software (HEVACOMP, IES, Revit, AutoCAD)

  • Understanding of DSEAR/ATEX requirements


Qualifications:


Essential:



  • Degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering

  • Registered as Incorporated Engineer with IMechE, IET, or CIBSE

  • SMSTS, SSSTS, or IOSH Managing Safety

  • CSCS Card (AQP or PQP)

  • Full UK driving licence


Desired:



  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering

  • Chartered Engineer status

  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate or formal HSE training

  • Project management qualification (APM, PRINCE2, etc.)

  • Strong leadership and people management skills

  • Ability to work under pressure and make decisive decisions

  • Collaborative and forward-thinking, with excellent communication skills

  • Flexible and willing to work out of hours when needed


Experience:


Essential:



  • At least seven years’ experience in a similar Mechanical or Public Health Engineering role

  • Previous experience in infrastructure or construction environments

  • Familiarity with offsite construction, modularisation, and pre-fabrication techniques


Desired:



  • Experience on Network Rail or HS2 projects

  • Experience working on large railway station projects

  • Commissioning experience
