The National Trust
Area Ranger - Holt
Job Location
Job Description
Summary
Working on the stunning North Norfolk Coast at the remote Blakeney Point, you’ll be responsible for leading a staff and volunteers to create and implement nature conservation plans, engage visitors and local stakeholders & co-ordinate the day-day management of this special place.
Come rain or shine, your love of wildlife and the outdoors will inspire others as you strive to ensure that important species of terns and other shore-birds and seals are protected and that our visitors feel a connection and custodianship with the places in our care.
You'll be required to work weekends on a rota, bank holidays and evening work, as well as early starts for surveys.
Accommodation is provided to the postholder for 7 months of the year for the proper or better performance of their duties in accordance with Trust criteria and HMRC rules.
What it's like to work here
Waking up in the Old Lifeboat House to the sounds of seals, sea birds, weather and waves is pretty magical.
With the support of two seasonal Rangers you'll be the eyes, ears and feet on the ground doing all you can to protect and monitor breeding terns and ensuring the success of other breeding shore birds. In the winter months you'll need to have your own accommodation on the mainland and you'll lead work from our Blakeney base at Friary Farm. This work will include monitoring & managing the breeding grey seal colony, wider land management across the North Norfolk Coast and some desk based work.
What you'll be doing
You'll be responsible for leading work on Blakeney Point; inspiring and managing a small team; seeking opportunities to grow support for our work via fundraising and volunteering opportunities; sharing stores with the media; collaborating with stakeholders; developing wildlife management plans; co-ordinating survey and monitoring; enabling access and managing disturbance and undertaking health and safety work.
The Point team has use of a boat and a 4x4 vehicle as access is limited by tides and the long shingle spit - things to take into consideration when organising days off and trips to the supermarket.
It is safe to say that no two days are the same, with changing tides, changing weather and a changing cast of seasonal wildlife it is truly a dynamic environment and certainly never dull.
You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all of the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what’s possible in this role.
Who we're looking for
