Interpreter services include, but are not limited to interviews, counseling, classes, tutorials, meetings, scheduling, and extra-curricular activities, as approved by the supervisor. Provide accurate interpretation between deaf/hard of hearing and hearing individuals taking into consideration the cultural and linguistic differences. May assist University staff and/or supervisor as requested with special projects and assignments, provided the project/assignment does not interfere with the interpreter’s ability to provide interpreting/transliterating services. Perform related duties such as attending meetings, and conferences as appropriate or assigned by supervisor. May participate in the search and screen process of applicants for employment.Decision MakingN/AFiscal ResponsibilityN/ASupervisory ResponsibilityN/AMinimum Requirements ProfileIncumbent must hold a Bachelor’s degree, and be registered with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. In accordance with PA Act 57 of 2004, interpreters must register with the Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ODHH).Applicants who possess provisional registration with Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry will be considered. Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the NAD-RID National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Knowledge Test, documentation of successful completion of the certification test, as well as docmentation of non-provisional state registration with the Pennsylvania Office for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (ODHH). MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:A minimum of two years interpreting experience in a variety of settings using a variety of communication modes required.Preferred QualificationsExperience interpreting in higher education.Applicant Rating CriteriaKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of both formal and informal registers of English and American Sign Language as appropriate for university settings.In-depth knowledge and adherence to the Code of Professional Conduct established by the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc.Knowledge of deafness/hearing loss and the linguistic, social, cultural and developmental effects.Mastery of specialized vocabulary for both languages: technical, medical, and scientific, etc.Ability to perform simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, depending on the situation.Awareness and sensitivity of cultural and historical references in both deaf and hearing cultures.Ability to interact effectively with many different kinds of individuals in a variety of settings.Ability to present self in a favorable way to reflect the University and profession.Ability to work independently and in a team setting, to deal tactfully with others, and to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.Ability to establish rapport with persons from different ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds and to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress.Essential Functions1.
