A vacancy has arisen for an Energy Manager to join the Sustainability Team at Great Portland Estates (GPE).
This role reports to the Sustainability and Social Impact Director.
Energy Manager Key Responsibilities:
The EM is responsible for working closely with the Sustainability and Social Impact Director and the rest of the Sustainability team to ensure that energy is purchased, billed, metered, monitored and managed proactively. Working with the sustainability team, the EM is also responsible for ensuring that statute in relation to energy is complied with at all the Group’s and for supporting the business in the delivery of its net zero carbon ambitions. This also includes supporting on reporting requirements.
The EM will also ensure that all buildings owned and managed by the Group are supplied by the relevant utilities on appropriate contracts, and that customers bear a fair proportion of these contract costs.
Manage utility contracts
The EM will be the main point of contact with our energy broker for the retendering and billing of energy contracts. The EM will ensure that utilities are provided to each of the Group’s buildings on suitable contracts to ensure that both GPE and our customers benefit from appropriate prices, and that payment terms and other contract requirements are in line with GPE practice. The EM will liaise with the energy broker and Accounts Team to ensure that utilities invoices are paid in accordance with payment terms and allocated to the correct property and charge codes.
The EM will liaise with the energy broker to ensure that utility supplies are cancelled or transferred as appropriate when properties are bought, sold, tenants vacate (on lease expiry) or take occupation (new lease). Where properties are due for major refurbishment or redevelopment, the EM will liaise with Building Surveyors and Project Managers to ensure that meter and supply removals are arranged in a timely fashion with the appropriate 3rd parties, and that new supplies are installed correctly.
The EM is also responsible for ensuring all mains supplies have the relevant ancillary contracts in place to ensure regular maintenance of main meters as well as access to the relevant data flows.
Maintain energy database
Working with the Customer Experience team and the technical services team, the EM will ensure that accurate and up to date records of utility supplies are kept, this will include a record of the mains utility supplies into the various buildings as well as relevant sub-metering systems. The EM will ensure that meter readings are received and checked regularly, with the appropriate readings inputted into the GPE energy management system (MRI Energy) . Regular monitoring for clear discrepancies or anomalies should be undertaken. All relevant supplies will be provided with suitable energy meters to allow efficient data collection.
The EM is also responsible for ensuring there are appropriate energy data flows into the energy management system.
Energy recharging
The EM will oversee the recharging of electricity by the Accounts Team. Energy recharging is required for all multi-let buildings where customers’ consumption occurs ‘downline’ of a main energy meter. This should be actioned at least quarterly. The EM will ensure that the appropriate data flows from the sub-metering systems are in place to measure customers energy use in multi-let buildings, so that energy use can be recharged accurately. The EM will liaise with Building Surveyors and Project Managers to ensure that the appropriate sub-metering systems are installed in new refurbishment or development projects (providing specifications and advice when required).
Energy reporting
The EM will ensure that the Group’s energy consumption is measured accurately and reported in accordance with best practice and legislative guidelines. The EM will analyse energy usage data in consultation with the Technical Services Managers and Customer Experience Managers to establish trends and to help identify opportunities for improving the energy efficiency. The EM will also identify the potential for installing sub-metering and smart metering systems in order to improve the quality of energy measurement and reporting. The EM will liaise with the Sustainability and Social Impact Director to ensure that accurate data is provided to allow completion of reporting requirements. The EM will also be responsible for upgrading existing NHH electricity supplies in accordance with new legislation coming in in 2026.
Customer Usage
The EM will provide tenants with usage data both direct and via appropriate means. Information provided will include recommendations for energy saving. The EM will also attend various properties’ Environmental Working Group (EWG) meetings to help improve energy efficiency.
Service Charge Budgeting
The EM will oversee the preparation of budgetary figures and explanations for service charge budgets and reconciliations for each property at the relevant month of the year.
Training
The EM will keep abreast of current legislation in the energy arena. This may involve attending courses/seminars as appropriate.
Contract Management
The EM is responsible for managing the various utility contracts, the energy bureau contract and the contract for the energy management database ensuring both GPE and the 3rd parties are meeting set KPI’s and contract performance is at an acceptable level.
Performance measurement
- Utility contracts in place at all Group buildings;
- energy consumption across the Group compiled, monitored, analysed, actioned and reported, where appropriate, on a timely basis;
- Customer recharges are created, checked and billed in a suitable timeframe
All contracts under the EM’s purview are performing according to their KPI’s and appropriate mitigations put in place for underperforming contracts; and
- training relevant to role and personal development.
Person Specification
- A minimum of 3 years experience in the field but preferably over 5.
- Experience in contract management, energy management systems and the UK energy sector critical.
- Proven line management experience
- Proven experience of portfolio management
- Excellent communicator at all levels of seniority
- A background in engineering / economics and some experience in ISO50001 would be beneficial.
