Job Description

Next-Generation Nuclear Power Design

Join Holtec Britain, a member of the Holtec International family; a global leader in designing an unconditionally safe and secure source of clean energy. Holtec has received funding from the FNEF to advance its SMR programme, and is building its brand new team based in Bristol.

The Senior Civil Structural Engineer is responsible to assist with the development of the Structural chapter of the Safety Case for submission to the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) for use in the Generic Design Assessment (GDA). The UK GDA is a critical element for commercial deployment of SMR-300s world-wide, and this role provides a unique opportunity in an exciting emerging technology and energy marketplace.

You would be called upon to analyse metallic, reinforced concrete and soil-subgrade supported structures. The analyses will support engineering and licensing requirements, leading to the licensing and construction of SMR-300 plants across the globe. You will use and learn various methods and software to perform the analyses.

SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Execute and document analyses for building and support structures
  • Review available concept designs based on an ambiguous set of requirements, then develop them into mature designs by critical thinking, literature research, interacting with team members from other disciplines and vendors, and any analyses as permitted by project milestones
  • Support the preparation of design deliverables, presentations, and communicate design progress in stakeholder meetings
  • Support development of engineering and licensing requirements and documentation for nuclear structures, systems and components

TYPICAL ANALYSES

  • Static and dynamic finite element analyses (FEA) using ANSYS
  • Drop and impact (e.g., missile and aircraft) analyses and target response using LS-DYNA
  • Simulation of the seismic response of freestanding structures in air or submerged in water
  • Static and dynamic analyses of large reinforced concrete or steel-concrete composite structures
  • Soil-structure interaction (SSI) analyses with freestanding and/or anchored structures
  • Beam and plate stress calculations using established principles of strength of materials

REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical/Civil/Structural Engineering
  • Familiarity with industry standards and design codes such as ASME, ASCE, ACI and AISC
  • Industrial experience in stress analysis codes such as ANSYS, LS-DYNA, and STAAD.Pro
  • Prior nuclear industry experience
  • Excellent credentials in principles of solid mechanics
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills
  • Eligible to work under 10 CFR Part 810

Bristol offers a vibrant community with excellent amenities, schools, and a high quality of life. It provides easy access to various attractions and is well-connected to Wales, the Midlands and the South.

This is a remarkable opportunity to contribute to the development of next-generation nuclear power technology with a global leader. If you’re seeking a dynamic role in an emerging technology and energy marketplace, apply now to be part of our multidisciplinary team.
