Job Duties
This position is an hourly/wage position. Wage employees may not work more than 29 hours per work week on average over the course of a year and are limited to 1,500 hours within a 12-month period. No State benefits are provided.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District is seeking an Engineer Technician Senior Structure and Bridge to draft, design, detail, or review bridge and other structural plans for new construction, maintenance repair and rehabilitation projects. Check structural elements to meet VDOT requirements for alignment, geometry, strength and economy. Compute dimensions, clearances, elevations, and quantities of materials.
Core responsibilities for job & position:
- Maintain project correspondence and miscellaneous records and as built plans. Prepare contract documents within established timeframes.
- Address questions, policies and procedures related to assigned program area. Provide support to field personnel. Provide guidance related to VDOT policy and standards.
- Prepare preliminary and final design or analysis for bridges or miscellaneous structures in accordance with AASHTO and VDOT guidelines and specifications within established timeframes.
- Compile and maintain automated and written reports and project records for assigned program areas. Records are maintained in accordance with guidelines and policies.
- Review or inspect field work being performed by VDOT staff or contractors. Determine compliance with policies, procedures and standards.
- Check or review structural plans and shop drawings for conformance with AASHTO and VDOT guidelines and specifications within established timeframes.
- Compute quantities to develop cost estimates and prepare reinforcing steel schedules. Compute various items to include elevations, clearances and dimensions.
- Document, enter and complete required data such as work orders, schedules or records. Provide technical assistance to field staff and contractors and provide training.
- Demonstrate knowledge of all project activities and deliverables. Manage time to ensure project work is completed efficiently and within timeframes established by supervisor. Inform supervisor in a timely manner regarding issues which may affect the scheduled completion of an assignment.
- Communicate with VDOT staff as well as external staff (consultants, localities, etc.) to proactively resolve issues. Advise supervisor on critical developments and field observations.
- Apply advance principles and practices of engineering technology to assigned program areas. Interpret policies and procedures and apply in daily work assignments.
- Develop geometry for bridge and other structural components. Prepare structural details and plans using MicroStation. Revise plans within established timeframes.

- Ability to prioritize multiple projects and adjust priorities as needed.
- Ability to design bridge structure components and complete final bridge plans from preliminary sketches.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
- Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures related to VDOT's program areas.
- Skill in the use of computers and job-relevant software programs.
- Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations
Minimum Qualifications
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include CADD and other engineering and structural design software.
- Knowledge of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statics and strengths of materials.
- Ability to coordinate and work well with others in a team environment.
- Knowledge of basic structural engineering design practices and techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret road and bridge plans and apply design specifications and standards.
- Knowledge of drafting with emphasis on structural drafting and detailing.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects and adjust priorities as needed.
- Ability to design bridge structure components and complete final bridge plans from preliminary sketches.
- Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations.
Additional Considerations
- A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering Technology, Drafting, Design or related field desired.
- Experience in structural drafting and design, computer-aided design, and plan preparation.

Position is designated as essential and, as such, will be required to work outside normal hours, weekends, and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. Travel may be required.

VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
