Project Director

Location: Derby

Overview: We are seeking an experienced and visionary Project Director to lead a major nuclear new build EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) project. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the entire lifecycle of the project, from initial planning and design through to commissioning and handover. This role requires strong leadership, deep industry knowledge, and the ability to manage complex, high-stakes projects within the nuclear sector.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Project Leadership:
    • Lead the execution of a large-scale nuclear new build project, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
    • Establish and maintain effective project governance, including oversight of engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities.
  2. Strategic Planning:
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive project plan, including scope definition, budgeting, scheduling, and risk management strategies.
    • Ensure that the project is delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
  3. Stakeholder Management:
    • Engage and communicate with key stakeholders, including government agencies, regulatory bodies, contractors, and internal teams.
    • Foster strong relationships with clients and stakeholders to ensure their expectations are met or exceeded.
  4. Regulatory Compliance:
    • Ensure all project activities comply with national and international nuclear safety regulations and standards.
    • Liaise with regulatory authorities to secure necessary permits and approvals.
  5. Risk Management:
    • Identify, assess, and manage project risks, developing mitigation strategies to address potential issues before they impact the project.
    • Conduct regular risk reviews and implement changes to the project plan as necessary.
  6. Resource Management:
    • Allocate and manage resources, including personnel, equipment, and materials, to optimize project performance.
    • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers, managers, and support staff.
  7. Financial Oversight:
    • Develop and manage the project budget, ensuring accurate forecasting, cost control, and financial reporting.
    • Monitor financial performance and take corrective actions as needed to ensure the project remains within financial targets.
  8. Quality Assurance:
    • Implement and maintain quality control processes to ensure all aspects of the project meet or exceed industry standards.
    • Conduct regular audits and inspections to verify compliance with quality and safety requirements.
  9. Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE):
    • Champion a strong safety culture, ensuring that all project activities prioritize the health and safety of personnel and the protection of the environment.
    • Ensure compliance with all HSE policies and procedures, and lead incident investigations if required.
  10. Project Reporting:
    • Provide regular project status updates to senior management and stakeholders, including progress reports, financial updates, and risk assessments.
    • Prepare and present detailed project reports for board meetings and external stakeholders.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Project Management, or a related field. A master’s degree or relevant certifications (e.g., Project Management Professional (PMP), Chartered Engineer (CEng)) is preferred.
New Build EPC experience using staged gate / RIBA approach on a brownfield site.
Nuclear Based experience.
Evidence of leading multi partner teams desired.

Experience:

Minimum of 15 years of experience in project management within the nuclear or energy sectors, with at least 10 years in a senior leadership role overseeing large-scale EPC projects.

Skills:

Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
In-depth knowledge of nuclear industry regulations, standards, and best practices.
Proven track record of delivering complex projects on time and within budget.
Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
