Background to J&L

Established for 20 years, J&L are a leading supplier of high-quality lift equipment for use in the modernisation of existing lifts and in new lift design. We are the UK agents for some of the world’s most recognised brand names such as LiftEquip, Cobianchi, MGTI, Hans Jungblut, Switch and more. We work closely with lift installation companies, architects, designers and consultants to provide the best technical solutions available for our customers.

The company is employee owned (EO), having been established originally by a lift industry expert of over 45 years’ experience. Following the considerable growth and success of the company, it was placed into employee ownership by the founders, in June 2021, under the current board and management team.


The company’s EO status allows for profit sharing with all employees, on a partial tax-free basis. The current management team have over 40 years’ experience in the lift industry and have grown both sales and profits successfully in the last 3 years, along with a small, but developing, wider team.


The Opportunity

As a result of our continuing success and significant sales growth, we are looking to recruit a National Sales Manager, to strengthen our sales team, ideally based in commuting distance of London. After a period of proven performance there is the potential to move into the role of Sales Director.


The successful candidate will be required to maintain J&L’s existing product sales growth and to develop new business. In addition, the role involves managing a small sales team.


The key responsibilities for the role will involve, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Identify new and existing market opportunities for J&L.
  • Account management and development of the existing customers sales pipelines in order to sustain the company’s record of revenue growth.
  • Achieve/exceed the monthly sales targets.
  • Follow up quotations, negotiate and convert to orders.
  • Pricing orders in line with existing or improved margin on sales.
  • Provide accurate and timely forecasts including assisting in yearly budgeting. Complete monthly sales reports and attend sales meeting.
  • Regularly visit customers’ and consultants’ premises/sites to develop relationships and follow up on business opportunities through to orders.
  • Create, manage and present sales reports and presentations.
  • Visit suppliers’ premises and develop relationships in the UK and abroad.
  • Attend exhibitions UK and abroad; this includes detailed involvement in Liftex London (June 25) and Germany (October 25).
  • Willingness to travel throughout the UK with occasional overnight stays as required
  • Actively participate in all relevant internal and external training and industry events e.g. CIBSE, lift symposium.
  • Proactively network in the sector to build on and expand the company’s access to new customers, contractors and suppliers.


Candidates should possess a detailed technical understanding of lift engineering to fulfil this role.

The successful candidate will ideally be either be a lift engineer who has moved into sales or a lift industry sales professional of several years’ experience.

To succeed in this role you must also possess some or all of the following attributes:

  • Can demonstrate a history of new business sales – “hunter” sales approach
  • Commercial acumen
  • Team player, able to manage and inspire
  • Managerial level IT literacy
  • Ability to listen and articulate effectively
  • Organised, able to manage time effectively, flexibly and to prioritise tasks
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Opportunity generation and pipeline development across all portfolio components
  • Excellent negotiation and closing skills
  • Flexible approach, responsive, with a positive “can do” attitude
