Job Description

Overall Purpose:

To assist in the carrying out of mechanical repairs and installation work in accordance with the Medical Research Council's specifications and Codes of Practice. To observe, at all times, the Health and Safety at Work Regulations in order to maintain a safe working environment.

Main Duties/Key Responsibilities:
  • Undertake installation, operation, fault-finding and maintenance of the MRC Harwell site's wide range of mechanical building services, including HVAC, domestic water system, steam systems, compressed air and all other piped systems
  • Carry out works efficiently and effectively, acquiring and signing off work through the MRC-designated Planet FM mobile device application
  • Undertake an active role in site services condition surveys and, where required, formal inspection, testing and verification of mechanical systems
  • Carry out compliance-related maintenance tasks, including Legionella water monitoring, systems flushing, boiler-water sampling, water-storage vessel inspections (training will be given)
  • Fault-finding and maintenance on a wide range of mechanical automation equipment such as autoclaves, sterilisation equipment, air compressors etc.
  • Ensure that all work carried out on the MRC Harwell site is completed in an effective and professional manner and that all current Health & Safety and technical legislation is adhered to, including:
    • Risk assessments and method statements (produced by in-house staff)
    • Safe systems of work (permits/isolation procedures/hot works/testing and recommissioning)
  • Ensure that works are completed to a high standard and in a timely fashion, so as to minimise their impact upon scientific programmes
  • Accept training in future developments and technologies, taking on additional nominated person responsibilities as required
  • Provide additional support and assistance to the Building Services team in maintenance and repairs of the site and any other duties which may from time to time be reasonably required within the general level of responsibility of the post
  • Engage in the mentoring and development of team members (including the support of apprentices)
  • Champion the Engineering & Estates service in a positive manner
  • Deliver a high level of customer service
  • Attend appropriate training to support the role and service delivery
  • Participate as part of an engineering on-call team as required (subject to management approval and operational requirements)
  • Procure materials, components and spares, ensuring that stock levels are maintained to maintain efficiency
  • Take on the role of first aider (training will be given)

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications/Training Required:

Essential:
  • Recognised mechanical qualification City & Guilds Level 2/3 in a mechanical discipline such as HVAC/Plumbing & Heating/Pipe fitting etc. or in the final year of a recognised apprenticeship scheme
  • Proven experience in a previous mechanical engineering role
  • UK driving licence

Desirable:
  • Steam systems trained (Spirax Sarco or equivalent)

Previous Work Experience Required:

Essential:
  • Two years' experience in a recognised mechanical role

Desirable:
  • Demonstrable experience with mechanical plant and controls e.g. building management system, HVAC

Knowledge and Experience:

Essential:
  • Comprehensive understanding of industrial pipe fitting and arrangement
  • Knowledge of air handling plant maintenance

Desirable:
  • Understanding of Legionella document L8
  • Demonstrable experience of building services or estates environment

Personal skills/Behaviours/Qualities:

Essential:
  • Conscientious, self-motivated, punctual, team player with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Able to work in a methodical and structured way and have confidence in dealing with suppliers and service users
  • Able to work within a multi-disciplinary team and able to communicate effectively with colleagues and the wider scientific community
  • Willing to undertake relevant training where necessary
