Job Description

SUMMARY OF THE POSITION Person who contributes to the identification of needs in a neighborhood or sector, as well as provides information to the clientele and refers users to the appropriate resources. SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS: The birthing assistant supports families through their journey into parenthood. She is involved in the pregnancy and postpartum of the women and newborn follow-up alongside the midwife to support their health of the whole family. She can work from the birthing home, Midwifery Services offices, hospital and the family's home. Under the midwife's supervision, she supports the parents based on their individual needs. She provides important support in the operations of the Midwifery Services, the organization and upkeep its material and equipment. She is involved in the daily tasks such as: Support parent's choice of their care during the perinatal period in a holistic manner; Participate and organize perinatal group meetings; Assist the midwives and support women during labour and birth (fill the bath, cook meals, etc.) Support the midwife in the consultation or transfer processes when required; Attend to mothers and families at all times during the immediate postpartum period at the birthing home, hospital or at home (breastfeeding support, cleaning, meals preparation, etc.); Prepare and clean the material and equipment including sterilization; Keep inventory of the Midwifery Services material and equipment; Participate in the administrative support of the Midwifery Services; Collaborate with Midwifery Services partners including Awash and Nishiiyuu Departments; Assist with daily tasks of the Midwifery Services; Carry out other tasks upon the request of the supervisor. REQUIREMENTS Education: High School Diploma Breastfeeding training of a minimum of 14 hours is an asset Experience: Experience in perinatality is an asset Please note that applicants who do not have the above mentioned requirements may be considered for this position if they possess the following requirements. A reading and writing test must also be successfully completed to be considered. Alternative Profile: A minimum of 2 years of experience in perinatality (having children can be recognized) Knowledge and Abilities: Be available to be on-call for days, nights and weekends in rotation; Provide own transportation during on-call periods; Knowledge of the clientele and issues; Knowledge of and adhesion with midwifery principles and philosophy; Knowledge and experience supporting normal birthing; Knowledge of breastfeeding and other feeding alternatives; Ability to support a family-centered care and services approach; Ability to identify and assess the needs of each family and adapt their services accordingly; Ability to respect parents' autonomy in their own care and the care of their newborn; Ability to respect for the cultural values and concerns of the client and the community; Apply confidentiality policy; Good physical health; Organizational and prioritization skills; Excellent listening skills; Flexibility; Sense of initiative; Autonomy; Teamwork skills; Respect. LANGUAGE Fluent in Cree and English. OTHER Available on call to work a flexible schedule: days, evenings and nights, as needed (24/7). On-call periods shared. Premium for availability during on-call periods and overtime according to Collective Agreement.
