Job Description

As a Hospital Engineer, you will be involved in the planning, designing, and evaluating of various systems (control, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, central utility, conveyance, and medical gas) for the University of Maryland Medical Center. Responsibilities span master and facility planning, project planning, design, construction, commissioning, and acceptance.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Facility Infrastructure Systems Planning:
    • Understand current infrastructure systems.
    • Assist the Sr. Hospital Engineer in developing and implementing the infrastructure master plan for UMMC facilities.
  • Engineering Design Standards:
    • Develop, maintain, and update engineering design standards for the Medical Center.
    • Monitor and stay updated on standards, codes, and regulations (e.g., The Joint Commission, Life Safety, Building Code, ASHRAE, state and local regulations).
    • Ensure compliance with all accreditation and regulatory bodies.
    • Communicate standards to project managers and designers.
  • Capital Planning:
    • Assist the Senior Hospital Engineer, Senior Staff Architect, and Director of Project Development with capital planning.
  • Construction Quality Review:
    • Review completed work for professional adequacy, serviceability, maintainability, and conformance with construction documents and hospital standards.
  • Commissioning and Recommissioning:
    • Monitor, inspect, and evaluate new construction and existing physical plant systems (mechanical, electrical, energy, life safety, medical gas, and building systems).
    • Manage consultants and engineers performing project commissioning activities.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical Engineering required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • A Registered Professional Engineer’s license in Maryland is preferred.
  • Five years of experience in healthcare or high-performance central plant systems engineering design, planning, or plant operations preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local electrical and mechanical standards, codes, designs, and regulations pertinent to the hospital environment.
  • Proficiency in computer system management, Computer Automated Design (CADD), and the use of electrical power and mechanical measuring and monitoring equipment.
  • Ability to navigate and work in utility areas, crawl spaces, trenches, manholes, roofs, and climb ladders and scaffolding to inspect systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and leadership skills to interact effectively with project engineers, consulting firms, administration, medical and support staff, and to draft technical specifications.
  • Commitment to professional growth through in-service training, external seminars, and other activities to stay updated in the electrical field.
  • Team player with a collaborative approach, willing to work with project managers, consultants, contractors, medical and support staff, and clinical users.
