Who you are: We are always looking for amazing talent who can contribute to our growth and deliver results Geotab is seeking a Principal Data Scientist with previous experience in Geospatial related projects to actively work on the designing of data modelling processes, as well as to actively contributing to broad technical strategies, decisions and processes that impact the delivery of analytical solutions. What you'll do: The Principal Data Scientist is primarily responsible for thought and technical leadership in data science, actively contributing to broad technical strategies, decisions and processes that impact the delivery of analytical solutions at Geotab. Part of this role involves influencing and delivering projects with organizational impact and priority, acting as a technical lead and mentor for the department and maintain Geotab’s reputation as a data science leader through the participation in public-facing talks and events, and meetings with external clients. This role requires collaborating and building relationships with other data scientists, developers at all levels, engineers, and internal technical teams in a mentorship role, and contributing towards the development of the department’s roadmap. The position supports the data science teams in data product development initiatives and acts as a technical guide in advanced modelling and r&d initiatives. How you'll make an impact: Oversee R&D initiatives across diverse data science teams, identifying opportunities for alignment, and addressing technical gaps and risks. Lead data labelling initiatives and develop robust model evaluation techniques to ensure high-quality and reliable outcomes. Continuously establish, refine, and enforce best practices in data analytics and coding standards within data science projects. Serve as a technical coach and mentor to teams across the department by actively playing a part in the formation of technical strategies, setting decisions and authoring methodology Enable legal team in identifying patent opportunities and novel machine learning concepts applied in the R&D team’s work Provide project leadership and guidance to the team as a technical subject matter expert in data science Keep up-to-date documentation for all areas of responsibility Share technical knowledge to large groups internally and externally, stay well-informed of the industry state-of-the-art, and bring ideas of new technologies, techniques, and practices to the team Take ownership of technical architecture, identify and contribute to the department’s technical strategy and roadmap, and execute to improve products, infrastructure and processes. Break down complex projects into simple systems that can be effectively built and maintained by less experienced data scientists/ developers. Collaborate and share technical knowledge across teams to influence Geotab’s ability to meet cross-functional company goals and achieve larger technical ambitions. Work with leadership to align the data science strategy with overarching vision, mission, and technical goals of the department. Design and implement systems and frameworks that can succeed long term and work well with other platforms at Geotab Stay aware of changes around the company to anticipate and prevent obstacles from hindering team performance. Become a peer to others across the department and drive inter-department technical engineering initiatives that improve product, infrastructure, and processes. Demonstrate Geotab’s core values and culture through collaboration across teams, encouraging recognition and engagement initiatives, attending company events, and demonstrating thought leadership in areas of expertise. Participate in the recruitment process. Work with people managers to evaluate the technical acumen of less experienced data scientists and plan growth opportunities. What you'll bring to the role: 12 years of required previous experience in the following areas: Proven track record of leading complex data science projects from conception to delivery, preferably in a business or industry setting Geotab’s dominant programming languages for data science (i.e. Python, and SQL), with experience in other relevant languages an asset (e.g. R, C, JavaScript). Object-oriented programming principles. Big data data mining and warehousing programs (e.g. experience with Google BigQuery, Amazon Redshift, or Azure Synapse). Wide variety of supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques for data exploration and deployment in production systems (e.g. DBSCAN, K-Means Clustering, KNN, DNN, CNN, XGBoost, Random Forest, SVM, Linear/Logistic Regression, Dimensionality Reduction). Common modules and packages for machine learning in Python (e.g. scikit-learn, SciPy, NumPy, TensorFlow). Orchestration platforms for data pipelines (e.g. Apache Airflow). Big data processing SDKs (e.g. Apache Beam, Apache Spark, Apache Hadoop). Experience working within a technical or engineering organization and knowledge of the high-technology industry is an asset. Leadership experience in a team-oriented workplace.
