Instagram | Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter Detailed Overview In accordance with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC standards of practice, Fraser Health's vision, mission and values, the occupational therapy acute care standard, and working collaboratively and in partnership with the Clinical Practice Leader and the interprofessional care team in the provision of patient and family centered care, the Clinical Educator provides education, orientation and training to the Occupational Therapy staff and assistants within various acute care units such as acute care, intensive care units and neurological rehabilitation. The Clinical Educator acts as a clinical resource, provides educational support, plans, implements and evaluates educational activities and programs, and assists with the development and implementation of occupational therapy competencies specific to acute care, intensive care and neurology. The Clinical Educator will collaborate with other healthcare providers regarding related clinical education and gather information for ongoing quality improvement and review. This role also carries a clinical caseload providing assessment, occupational therapy intervention and patient consultation. Responsibilities Determines education priorities that meets the needs of Occupational Therapists and Rehabilitation Assistants; complete learning needs assessments of individuals or groups to assist in the determination of the educational requirements and their objectives. Develops, plans and revises educational and orientation activities and programs based on latest research and evidence based practice for occupational therapy rehabilitation treatments, equipment modalities, literature and resources, and education theory. Creates supportive and interprofessional learning environments; utilizes education theory and builds strong professional relationships with learners in order to facilitate open communication. Delivers learner-centered education to staff/students through methods such as teaching, role modeling, demonstrating, mentoring, coaching, facilitating groups, providing lectures, and conducting formal presentations. Serves as an occupational therapy clinical resource for complex or challenging clients or situations and supports complex referrals/discharges such as mobility challenges and use of equipment; develops and maintains related reference manuals, policies, and provides clinical advice to staff/students. Plans and schedules educational activities and maintains a system for tracking attendance; maintains statistics for reporting purposes. Evaluates education effectiveness by measuring the outcomes, determining whether the clinical objectives have been achieved, and assessing whether learning has occurred that results in the demonstration of best practices. Participates in activities related to quality improvement and safety, risk management, and service goals/objectives by methods such as evaluating effect of changes in practice, researching new equipment, and generating related recommendations. Participates in approved occupational therapy and interprofessional research, special projects, and committees including practice councils and clinical decision support tool development. Carries a patient caseload; assesses, plans, implements and evaluates treatment of assigned patients. Maintains a variety of records, enters data, documents information, notes patient progress/changes to treatment plans, records test/treatment results, and completes statistics on workload activities. Collaborates with patients and their families/care givers in developing care plans and encourages family participation in plan development. Establishes a therapeutic relationship with clients and participates in interprofessional care planning for patients as appropriate. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education, Training and Experience Current full registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC. Three (3) years of recent related occupational therapy experience in acute care, intensive care and neurological rehabilitation, including one (1) year in a teaching/leadership role, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience Skills and Abilities Clinical proficiency/expertise in occupational therapy standards and practice within a patient and family centered model of care. Knowledge of occupational therapy standardized tests, measures, use of equipment and related techniques. Knowledge of the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia standards of practice and practice guidelines for clinical practitioner. Ability to provide direction and support to Occupational Therapists and support personnel with complex discharge planning needs. Ability to provide support, guidance and direction to Occupational Therapists and support personnel with complex patient populations. Advanced knowledge in the area of Neurology. Ability to teach, mentor and coach within individual and group settings. Ability to coordinate, develop and deliver education programs that meet objectives and that promote best practice. Ability to implement education based on changing practices e.g. service delivery model changes. Ability to foster effective teaching and learning relationships. Ability to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders in preparing training and programs. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to prioritize, problem solve and effectively deal with conflict situations. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in a continuously changing environment. Ability to carry a clinical caseload including ability to provide effective and respectful consultation and communication to patients, caregivers, rehabilitation assistants and other health care professionals. Ability to operate related equipment including related software applications. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
