About Sandoz

Sandoz Device Development Centre (SDDC) is the Cambridge-based medical device design and development centre of Sandoz.

SDDC develops medical devices and drug delivery systems that are technically challenging in support of Sandoz projects. Currently, around thirty people work at SDDC and our expertise is in designing, analysing, building, testing, and optimising high-volume, injection-moulded, mechanical and electro-mechanical devices.

SDDC is offering a year-long placement for aspiring Mechanical Engineers between August 2025 and August 2026.

Why Sandoz?

Generic and Biosimilar medicines are the backbone of the global medicines industry. Sandoz, a leader in this sector, touched the lives of almost 500 million patients last year. As part of Sandoz, you will have the opportunity to help more patients gain access to low-cost, high-quality medicines, sustainably.

Our momentum and entrepreneurial spirit is powered by an open, collaborative culture driven by our talented and ambitious colleagues, who, in return for applying their skills, experience an agile and collegiate environment with impactful, flexible-hybrid careers, where diversity is welcomed and where personal growth is encouraged!

About the Placement

The placement would suit engineering students with an aptitude for mechanical design, underpinned by a solid grounding in engineering theory. A working knowledge of materials & tools, as well as an appetite for building, testing, and refining prototypes, would also be preferred. Some experience (outside of university studies) of product design, fluid dynamics, 3D CAD, and/or data acquisition & analysis would be welcome but not essential.

Throughout the placement, SDDC colleagues will provide guidance, help to identify and develop aptitude in areas of interest, and provide or organise training in valuable engineering skills. Working on a mixture of projects, the student will gain knowledge and experience of the entire product development process. The size of the company and the nature of the work require each member of the team to be bright, self-motivated, resourceful, action-oriented, and confident in taking on responsibilities; these will include time & workload management, problem solving, and achievement of specified deliverables.

Open collaboration is at the heart of SDDC’s culture, so candidates will be expected to be personable and communicative, particularly in client-facing, or wider company-facing, situations. The environment, atmosphere, and dress code are informal & friendly, and a good sense of humour is valued.

Interns have made significant contributions to both our projects and to our culture over the years, and we hope that a year at SDDC prepares them well for their remaining time at university and their subsequent careers. Several former placement students have joined us again as graduates.

Suitable applicants will be invited to an initial Microsoft Teams interview which is likely to be during November and will last approximately 30 minutes. Following these Microsoft Teams interviews successful candidates will be invited to a face-to-face interview in Cambridge. Dates are still to be confirmed for these interviews but likely to occur after term finishes in December.
