£23,328 - £24,154 - the band minimum is the normal starting pay for those new to a role. In exceptional circumstances, when relevant skills and experience can be identified, a higher starting salary may be considered.

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional Caretaker/Yard Person join our Estates team. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. We employ experts from many different professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the lights on, feed the research and support teams and keep everyone safe!

You'll be joining our You'll be joining our Estates Team, which covers activities both in the UK and Polar regions. You would operate within the UK based Estates Team. The team are responsible for the delivery of construction projects, keeping the Estate in good working condition, hosting events and managing the laboratories that facilitate outstanding scientific research at the BAS Headquarters in Cambridge. The Estates team holds a wide range of professional disciplines, from Project Managers, Engineers, Facilities Teams, Laboratory Managers and beyond.

Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop ongoing training and working relationships with a varied professional team. Continuing professional development is encouraged and supported throughout your time at BAS. A Buddy system is in place to help you settle into your role with likeminded colleagues and help you to feel part of the BAS community.

You'll be joining a world-leading interdisciplinary research organisation, that is committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support, you need to thrive at BAS.

Some of your main responsibilities will include:
  • Taking the lead on contractor inductions
  • Undertaking general repairs and maintenance
  • Managing access for contractors to various work sites at BAS Cambridge
  • Moving furniture or equipment
  • Footpath maintenance

For the role of Caretaker/Yard Person, we are looking for somebody who has:
  • Experience in working in a construction or building maintenance environment
  • Basic numeracy skills
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft office
  • The ability to work both individually and as part of a team
  • Developed skills in prioritising
