Role Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN Teacher to work with secondary school students who have a range of special educational needs. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing differentiated lessons tailored to meet the diverse needs of SEN pupils. You will work closely with the SENCO, mainstream teachers, support staff, and external specialists to ensure students receive the best possible support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and Learning:
    Plan and deliver high-quality lessons that are differentiated to meet the individual needs of SEN pupils, ensuring that all students are included in classroom activities and supported to succeed.

  • Individualised Support:
    Develop, implement, and review Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for SEN students, working closely with the SENCO and other staff to set achievable and realistic goals.

  • Collaboration:
    Work collaboratively with mainstream teachers to ensure that SEN students can access the curriculum, providing guidance and resources where necessary.

  • Progress Monitoring:
    Regularly assess and track the progress of SEN students, adapting teaching strategies as needed and reporting on pupil progress to parents, the SENCO, and other relevant stakeholders.

  • Liaison with External Agencies:
    Work closely with external professionals such as educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, and other specialists to ensure comprehensive support for students.

  • Positive Learning Environment:
    Create a safe, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment that encourages independence, self-confidence, and a positive attitude to learning.

  • Behaviour Management:
    Use appropriate behaviour management strategies to support pupils with emotional and behavioural difficulties, promoting positive behaviour and addressing challenges promptly and effectively.

  • Staff Development:
    Participate in and contribute to ongoing professional development, sharing best practices in SEN teaching with colleagues and staying up-to-date with current developments in SEN education.

Key Requirements:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS):
    Must hold QTS or an equivalent qualification, with experience in teaching secondary school pupils with special educational needs.

  • Experience in SEN Teaching:
    A solid understanding of working with secondary-aged pupils with SEN, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, Dyslexia, Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, and learning difficulties.

  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice:
    A thorough understanding of the SEND Code of Practice and current legislation related to SEN education in the UK.

  • Adaptability and Differentiation:
    Proven ability to differentiate teaching materials and strategies to meet individual learning needs and to use a range of creative approaches to engage and motivate students.

  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
    Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and external professionals.

  • Organisational Skills:
    Ability to manage a varied and demanding workload, prioritising tasks to ensure that the needs of SEN students are met.

Desirable:

  • Additional qualifications in SEN (e.g., Postgraduate SEN qualification, specialist dyslexia, or autism training).
  • Experience using assistive technologies and specialised resources to support SEN pupils.
  • Experience working with SEMH pupils and developing tailored interventions.
