INDIGENOUS EDUCATION ENHANCEMENT WORKER (School & Student Support B, SSB) Full-Time & Part-Time (0.6FTE-3 days/week) positions available These positions are restricted to candidates of Aboriginal ancestry. In this position, you will: Implement, under the direction of the classroom teacher, instructional programs for the general student body in Indigenous Education history and culture, as well as tutoring for individuals and small groups Assist Indigenous students to understand and derive maximum benefit from the school system, assist and cooperate with school counsellors in dealing with Indigenous students and their families Assist teachers and other school staff (SBRT) to understand and effectively meet the needs of Indigenous students and their families Act as a role model for Indigenous Education Enhancement students Promote, by various means including study programs, personal support, a high regard for Indigenous culture among the student body and a strong, positive self-image among Indigenous students Act as liaison between school counsellors, teachers, administrators, students, parents, and other community agencies including referring families to community agencies as appropriate Promote and develop involvement of Indigenous parents in the school system, assist the schools to develop opportunities for involvement of Indigenous parents and families Provide school & student support to school and Indigenous students Perform other work within the job band as assigned Itinerant Assignment: A School & Student Support worker is hired to work throughout the Vancouver School District and not for a particular school or a restricted set of duties. Although in posted vacancies specific reference may be made to a school and to the duties associated with that assignment, Employee Services may transfer staff within the system in certain circumstances as deemed appropriate. QUALIFICATIONS Completion of Grade 12 Minimum of one year of post-secondary training in: Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Applied Behaviour Science or Education, Child, Family & Community Studies, First Nations Studies, First Nations Community Development, First Nations Cultural Teachings or Indigenous Education Course Work Minimum of two months of Youth and Family Worker experience or equivalent experience working with or providing support for Indigenous youth/parents/guardians and community Knowledge of Indigenous Culture and urban condition Willing to travel to various schools throughout the district Restricted to candidates of Aboriginal ancestry. Applicants must indicate that they identify as First Nations, Metis, Inuit or Non-Status May work irregular hours (before, during and after school time) COMPENSATION The salary is $36.94 per hour, 7 hours/day, 5 days/week plus a comprehensive benefits package, including Municipal Pension Plan, Vancouver Employee Savings Plan, Extended Health, Dental, Group Life, Long Term Disability, Vacation, & Gratuity Days. Working months are September to June each year.
