We are seeking a Senior Counsel to become part of our expanding legal and compliance team. Reporting to the General Counsel in the United States, the Senior Counsel will independently handle various legal matters, primarily focusing on drafting and negotiating international commercial contracts; advising on data transfer and protection requirements; counseling on export and trade restrictions; and enforcing ethics and compliance requirements across Tanner’s regional offices in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Switzerland. The Senior Counsel will have the opportunity to own challenging projects, collaborate with executive leaders and industry partners, and contribute to the overall strategy of the legal team. This is a hybrid position based at Tanner’s office in St. Albans, England.

The ideal candidate will have 3+ years of experience in a law firm and/or corporate legal department dealing with international law issues, be self-motivated, creative and tenacious in solving complex legal and business challenges.

Role Accountabilities

Key Responsibilities for the Senior Counsel include:

  • Advising on complex legal issues in multiple fields, including commercial, healthcare compliance, international law, data privacy (GDPR), and compliance
  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts including service, distribution, licensing, data privacy and public-sector framework agreements
  • Interpreting and advising on EU, UK, Irish and Swiss laws and regulations
  • Supporting executive leaders and commercial teams in discussions with external parties including customers, partners, and suppliers, as required
  • Providing commercially focused and pragmatic legal advice and services
  • Research, anticipate, and protect the company against legal risks.
  • Support the continuous improvement of legal processes to promote efficiency
  • Assists in the development, revision and deployment of policies, procedures and trainings
  • Support the General Counsel and paralegals in all legal and compliance matters
  • Stay informed about current legislation and regulatory changes of interest to the company or that have relevance to the company’s operations
  • Effectively communicate with colleagues across the company
  • Perform administrative and management functions related to the company’s Legal Department

Desired Candidate Profile & Capabilities

Profile:

  • Qualified to practice law in the UK with at least 3 years of PQE
  • At least 3 years relevant experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts
  • Experience interpreting and applying data privacy laws relevant to international business transactions involving data transferred within and between European countries, Switzerland, UK, and/or the USA
  • Established understanding of ethics and compliance laws, and corporate program governance
  • Able to work independently without direct supervision and take ownership for advice provided
  • Experience working for or within pharma, biotech, or clinical trial industries preferred
  • Team player, willing to assist when and where needed to achieve goals of the organization
  • Proactive teammate who takes initiative and leads by example, continually seeks opportunities for improvement, inspires others and guides the team towards success
  • Solid communication skills and problem-solving skills are required to work with clients, Tanner team members, and stakeholders
  • Collaborative team player able to build positive relationships with colleagues and lead cross-functional teams.
