Job Description

**Job Title:** Surgical Technologist - General Surgery

**Job Specialty:** Surgical Technology

**Job Duration:** 13 weeks

**Shift:** 4-day, 10-hour day shift

**License:** Certified Surgical Technologist or Licensed Practical Nurse (Preferred)

**Certifications:** Basic Life Support (BLS), CST

**Must-Have:** National certification required

**Job Description:**

- Function under the direction of the registered professional nurse, assisting the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care.

- Perform duties in moderate to high acuity surgical cases, anticipating the needs of the surgeon and other team members.

- Exhibit skills for progressively more difficult cases, demonstrating an efficient, organized surgical plan.

- Take initiative to discuss surgical plans with the healthcare team and troubleshoot instruments and equipment.

- Prepare the operative suite and surgical field, maintaining the sterile field and addressing patient safety concerns.

- Gather required instruments and supplies, serving as a surgical assistant as needed.

- Assist with inventory, ordering, stocking operating rooms, and perioperative areas as assigned.

- Ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards.

- Check supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures, utilizing appropriate preference cards.

- Assist with room setup, opening of sterile supplies, and maintaining sterile techniques.

- Participate in procedure pauses/time-outs, gowning and gloving procedures, and passing instruments during surgeries.

- Maintain an organized back table and operative field, offering suggestions for facilitating cases.

- Perform post-procedure tasks, including specimen handling, cleaning, and preparing instruments for sterilization.

- Uphold principles of asepsis to prevent infection and ensure safety.

- Observe patient condition, reporting any changes to the physician and registered nurse.

- Plan proactively for procedure progression and adjust in emergency situations.

- Prepare case carts and assist with future case preparations.

- Provide relationship-based, patient-centered care under the supervision of the registered nurse, promoting a positive work environment and teamwork.

- Serve as a patient advocate, ensuring care and safety.

- Perform other duties as assigned, including supporting licensed staff, maintaining surgical equipment and supplies, and participating in performance improvement initiatives.

- Maintain 20 hours of continuing education related to the field per evaluation period.

- Complete all required competencies and education, providing a positive learning environment for students and new hires.

- Ensure organization and cleanliness of surgical areas.
