Role: Civil Designer (Structural Concrete & Water Works)
Location: Trafford, Greater Manchester
Employment Model: Permanent or Contract (Outside IR35)
Hybrid/ Home Working: No – 100% office based

The client is an emerging electrification engineering and civil construction contractor who works closely with a wide range of prestigious engineering and construction clients across a number of disciplines within the UK civil infrastructure industry. These disciplines include; Design, Engineering, Construction & Maintenance.
Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced and chartered Civil Designer with a strong background in structural concrete and waterworks design to join our clients dynamic team.
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering design solutions for critical water infrastructure projects, with a primary focus on Thames Water projects initially.
This position requires a deep understanding of civil engineering principles, structural integrity, and water treatment processes, ensuring all designs meet industry standards, safety regulations, and client expectations.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and Analysis:
* Lead the design and analysis of structural concrete elements for water treatment facilities, pumping stations, and other water-related infrastructure.
* Develop detailed designs for foundations, retaining structures, pipelines, and other key waterworks components.
* Ensure compliance with British Standards (BS), and other relevant regulations.
Project Delivery:
* Work closely with project managers, engineers, and stakeholders to deliver high-quality design solutions on time and within budget.
* Participate in technical reviews and approval processes, ensuring all designs meet client and regulatory requirements.
Client & Stakeholder Liaison:
* Liaise with Thames Water representatives and other stakeholders to ensure design alignment with project specifications.
* Provide expert guidance on structural integrity, material specifications, and project feasibility.
Technical Documentation:
* Prepare technical reports, calculations, and drawings using industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation).
* Ensure all documentation is accurate, comprehensive, and in line with project goals and legal requirements.
Compliance & Quality Control:
* Ensure all designs comply with health, safety, and environmental standards.
* Conduct site visits and inspections, as necessary, to ensure construction aligns with design specifications.
Requirements:
Qualifications:
* Chartered status with a recognised institution (e.g., ICE, IStructE).
* Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or related field).
Experience:
* Proven experience in structural concrete design, particularly within the water sector.
* Strong knowledge of water treatment processes, pumping stations, and Thames Water infrastructure projects.
* Experience in designing to Eurocodes and relevant British Standards.
Technical Skills:
* Proficiency in design and analysis software (AutoCAD and MicroStation experience essential)
* Strong understanding of structural concrete behaviour reinforced concrete design, and hydraulics in water systems.
* Familiarity with project delivery in highly regulated environments.
Soft Skills:
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
* Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and clients.
Preferred Skills:
* Experience in environmental sustainability within civil design.
* Knowledge of the UK water industry and experience working directly with Thames Water.
* Familiarity with BIM processes and digital design platforms.
