The MNCLHD are currently seeking an Aboriginal Health Worker to provide flexible, holistic and culturally sensitive health services to Substance Use in Pregnancy and Parenting Service for Aboriginal clients and the community to achieve better health outcomes and will and develop strong relationships and partnerships to improve better access to health services for Aboriginal community within the Mid North Coast Local Health District.

This position is based across Port Macquarie and Kempsey for the Mid North Coast Local Health District


The Aboriginal Health Worker will:
  • Establish and maintain a communication network between health providers and the community
  • Identify the health needs of individuals, groups and the wider Aboriginal community with the aim of reducing 28 day readmissions and encouraging a maintenance of health in the home with family, community and partners.
  • Participate in the provision of health promotion programs, appropriate referral, advice and information including basic health screening and monitoring
  • Network and liaise with other service providers to ensure a coordinated approach to health service delivery
  • Identify social and emotional wellbeing issues and refer and support as necessary
  • Undertake administrative tasks including maintenance of records, data collection and documentation ensuring the confidentiality of all clients is maintained
  • Ensure that services are provided in ways that maximise cultural safety, acceptability and respect
  • Assist in the collection of health data as delegated by a health professional
  • Work closely with other Health Professionals (such as Social Workers, Nursing and Medical Staff) to enhance and support wholistic care for Aboriginal patients through advocacy, cultural safety, soft referrals and external collaborations with services such as NDIS and ACAT.
  • Actively promote and participate in patient safety and ongoing quality improvement programs and engage in practices that promote the best possible health outcomes for patients/clients, and supports a culture of patient safety, clinical quality and innovation.

Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identify as being Aboriginal and be accepted in the community as such. All applicants must supply either a letter of Aboriginality signed under the common seal from a recognised incorporated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community organisation such as Land Council or Elders group, Aboriginal Medical Service or a letter on letterhead from a Local Aboriginal Land Council demonstrating membership of the Council.

The Organisation

The Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) is a government funded health organisation that covers an area of 11,335 square kilometres extending from Port Macquarie in the south to Coffs Harbour in the north. MNCLHD provides a diverse range of services to a population of approximately 215,000 people. It has a workforce of 4,694 across seven hospital sites and 12 Community Health Centres.

Salary will be accordance with NSW Health State Awards for the advertised classification/s. These awards are available at http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/careers/conditions/pages/default.aspx.

A TALENT POOL MAY BE CREATED FOR FUTURE ROLES AND WILL REMAIN VALID FOR 18 MONTHS

  1. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identify as being Aboriginal and be accepted in the community as such. All applicants must supply either a letter of Aboriginality signed under the common seal from a recognised incorporated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community organisation such as Land Council or Elders group, Aboriginal Medical Service or a letter on letterhead from a Local Aboriginal Land Council demonstrating membership of the Council. Exemption is claimed under Section 14D of the Anti-discrimination Act 1977 (NSW)
  2. Holds or aspires to hold a minimum Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or a minimum Certificate III health qualification in the area of care in which the Aboriginal Health Worker works and a willingness to participate in additional training as required.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, historical contexts which may influence health relevant Aboriginal health and other national and state policies/strategies
  4. Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with Aboriginal individuals, families and communities, and network with other services and health professionals.
  5. Knowledge of: confidentiality; documentation and information management; relevant legislation; ethics and duty of care; and mandatory reporting requirements in an Aboriginal primary health care environment
  6. Competent computer skills utilising varied and appropriate software programs (eg word processing, data management systems and spreadsheets)
  7. Current Driver's Licence and ability to travel as required.
