What you'll be doing

The Clinical Nurse Consultant provides expert clinical assessment and advice to patients/clients, carers and other health care professionals with complex healthcare needs within the Mental Health setting in ISLHD Emergency Departments.

This role is a Category A role. Preferred applicants will be reviewed for compliance and required to maintain compliance with the screening, assessment and vaccination requirements, relevant to your position, as outlined in NSW Health policy directive on Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases.

For positions designated as child-related employment, or positions that may result in proximity to children, you will be required to obtain a Working with Children clearance number from the Office of the Children’s Guardian.

To obtain a WWCC clearance number, follow the instructions on the website of Service NSW, which includes completing an online application form and then attending a Service NSW Centre or a NSW Council Agency that provides Road and Maritime Services, to provide proof of identity and pay for the WWCC to be completed.

Please note that a volunteer WWCC (which is free) cannot be used for paid employment.

Selection Criteria

  1. Registered nurse with a current licence to practice from the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and current NSW Driver’s License. Minimum five years full time equivalent post registration experience and in addition who has approved post registration qualification in Mental Health or such other qualifications or experience deemed appropriate by the public hospital or public health organisation.
  2. Proven knowledge or experience in acute Mental Health Care, with a demonstrated commitment to recovery oriented mental health service provision.
  3. Proven clinical leadership skills and an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
  4. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including Mental Health Assessment, consultation, liaison and networking skills.
  5. Proven skills in clinical teaching, the identification of education needs in the clinical area, and competency in the use of contemporary information systems.
  6. Commitment to the concept of Continuous Quality Improvement and ability to conduct research/evaluation and apply to an expanded scope of practice within the emergency department.
  7. Demonstrated experience in identifying, reviewing, implementing and evaluating clinical pathways, guidelines, flowcharts for specific age related or complex client groups.
