About the Opportunity
Applications are invited from qualified Radiation Oncology Physicists with significant research and development experience for a Medical Physics Specialist position within the Radiation Oncology Department at SWSLHD Cancer Services. The successful applicant would also be expected to take-up a conjoint position with the South West Clinical School, University of New South Wales.

The Medical Physics department of SWSLHD Cancer Srvices has a very active group of 17 Medical Physics Specialists & 3 physics registrars working across two radiotherapy centres.

This position has been created to provide medical physics research support to the department multi-disciplinary research program, ensuring translation of research to the clinic where appropriate. The successful candidate will have a strong research track record with experience working within a multi-disciplinary team, publications and grant submission and the ability to mentor others in research skills. In addition, it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute across the spectrum of clinical, development, and educational activities of the physics group.

There is a significant investment on research in the department and this position will provide a key link between the department and the Ingham Medical Physics research team which is comprised of a number of full-time staff and many students. The key focus of research over the next few years will be aligned with:

  • Imaging in radiotherapy including use of advanced MRI and the Australian MRI Linac
  • Accessing and learning from data including machine learning, federated learning and image analysis
  • Advanced clinical development including adaptive radiotherapy, MRI-only planning and motion tracking


Collaborative research with research linking our team with others is strongly encouraged.

This position will primarily be located at the Ingham Institute and Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre (LCTC) at Liverpool Hospital but the successful candidate may be required to travel to the Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre (MCTC) at Campbelltown Hospital to cover for research and education purposes or for meetings and to collaborating research centres such as universities and other hospitals.

The Ingham Institute hosts a number of research groups from different clinical areas and different universities and includes the research bunker which houses the Australian MRI-linac. The Ingham institute and its University partners provide strong academic support while located within the hospital precinct and enables and encourages active engagement between academia and the clinic.

Liverpool and Campbelltown Hospitals are teaching and tertiary referral hospitals that serve Sydney’s South West. Clinical equipment includes:

  • 6 Elekta Linear Accelerators with Agility MLCs, kV cone beam imaging & ABC units, and two with Hexapod couch
  • Tomotherapy Hi-Art Linear Accelerator
  • 2 X-Strahl Ortho voltage Unit
  • Nucletron HDR brachytherapy Unit
  • Virtual Simulation with dedicated Philips Brilliance Big Bore & Siemens Go OpenPro CT Scanners
  • Dedicated 3T MRI Scanner
  • RaySearch RayStation TPS
  • Additional dosimetry equipment and software tools

  1. A Bachelors degrees in physics, medical physics or equivalent discipline from a tertiary institution in Australia or equivalent from overseas, per National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) requirements.
  2. A PhD in physics, medical physics or equivalent discipline from a tertiary institution in Australia or equivalent from overseas (per NOOSR requirements).
  3. Research track record in areas of research interest to the department e.g. experience in development of imaging techniques for radiotherapy treatment planning and verification.
  4. Evidence of initiative and ability to prioritise amongst competing service requirements, and willing to work flexible work hours (early or late) at times, as required.
  5. Evidence of effective communication skills and history of research output both individually and in a multi-disciplinary research team.
  6. Evidence of high quality research output including publications, presentations and/or successful grant funding.
  7. Significant experience in radiation oncology physics and a demonstrated ability to achieve high standards of professional practice, along with evidence of a track record in commissioning radiotherapy equipment and/or implementation of new technologies.
