Job Description

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research.

We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.

Our culture empowers people to achieve this aim and to collectively, and individually, make a real difference.

The role

An exciting opportunity for a Media Officer. We are looking for creative storytellers who can promote our research projects and news through the media and our digital channels in the UK and across the globe.

In this role, you will be responsible for managing stories for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences home of the renowned 6G Innovation Centre, Global Centre for Clean Air Research, and Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing. The faculty's research has changed the way people view indoor air pollution, has helped the UK become a leader in telecommunication technologies and is developing innovative People-Centred Artificial Intelligence technologies, for example, to enhance accessibility and personalisation of broadcast and digital media consumption. But there is more yet to be done, and we are looking for someone to help us tell the next chapters of our stories.

We are looking for a natural relationship builder and storyteller who can translate complex information into engaging copy. Importantly, you will have a strong sense of what will make traditional news outlets take notice, and you will be equally obsessed with how you could reshape those same stories, so they become compelling content that our audience wants to engage with on our social media channels. We are looking for someone who can spot a story from a metaphorical mile away and who can build the profile of our academics, so they become the go-to source for expert advice and thought leadership. You will need to have the confidence to advise and upskill senior academics to meet their communications objectives.

About you

The successful candidates will have proven experience working in a busy communication, press or digital media environment ideally with some experience in science communications. You will be organised and creative. You will be able to demonstrate a track record of cultivating and maintaining relationships with journalists and influencers, as well as with a wide variety of internal stakeholders.

Crucially, we need someone who is bursting with new ideas, willing to learn from anyone, has the humility to evaluate their work on a regular basis and, most important of all, always acts with integrity.

Whats in it for you?

We offer a generous pension, relocation assistance, flexible working options, access to world-class leisure facilities on campus, a range of travel schemes, and supportive family-friendly benefits, including an excellent on-site nursery.

How to apply

Please make your application on the University website and submit aCV and cover letterwith your application. For further information, please see the job description.

Please note interviews are scheduled for week commencing 21st October.
