Job Description

Director, Environmental Planning

LUC thrives on having a positive impact in the world, and we want you to be part of our journey! Join our team and bring your sense of adventure along for the ride.

Who we are:

With nearly six decades leading the way in environmental consultancy, LUC is dedicated to shaping a brighter future for nature, people, and places. Our mission is clear: to drive positive change. LUC’s creative and forward-thinking teams tackle complex land use challenges at every scale. Our professionals are committed to addressing the climate and biodiversity crises. We're all about innovation and collaboration, and as we expand further, we're looking for passionate individuals to grow with us and make a positive impact.

As an independent, employee-owned company, we invest in our people and operate with kindness. Our company Charter provides the framework for us to live our values, in a working environment where our people can contribute meaningfully to projects that genuinely support sustainable development.

We are a multidisciplinary company, with integrated services encompassing planning, impact assessment, landscape design, ecology, and geospatial analysis, with clients across both public and private sectors. We operate collaboratively out of seven UK based offices. Each office has its own personality and we truly believe they are all great collaborative spaces to nurture and develop our talent.

Our people make LUC and we do not take that for granted. We offer an excellent remuneration and benefits package, appreciating there is more to a great place to work than the salary!

The opportunity

LUC is seeking to appoint a Director in our Edinburgh office, to further develop our EIA and wider impact assessment services. Our specialist EIA teams are involved in some of Scotland’s, and the wider UK’s, most important projects, including nationally significant infrastructure projects which facilitate the decarbonisation of the energy system as well as helping to secure biodiversity enhancement.

You will join a UK-wide team of environmental planners who are leaders in the field of EIA with extensive experience in renewable energy and energy infrastructure impact assessment. You will work across the company, building our portfolio of impact assessment projects in both the energy sector and others.

This is a strategic appointment, playing a key role in the geographical expansion of our services, and boosting leadership for our presence in Edinburgh. The role will suit an individual prepared to take an active role in leading and growing a team as well as generating new business within our existing sectors and additional sectors of interest to the Director and wider team.

This position will offer opportunities for continued progression in a key leadership role for an individual who is a competent manager and respected project director, with the aspiration to progress in a practice where flexibility is not a barrier to career development.

Salaries for director level roles depend on experience and will be discussed individually.

What You'll Bring:

As a senior manager and local office leader, you must be able to demonstrate sound leadership competencies and model positive behaviours in accordance with LUC’s culture and ethos, including:

  • Commercially and financially astute.
  • Strong communicator / negotiator.
  • A desire to be part of a forward-thinking, energetic team.
  • Strategic mind-set.
  • Decision making and complex problem solving.

  • Planning and organising.
  • Managing and delegation.
  • Drive for results.
  • Resilience, emotional intelligence.
  • Integrity / ethical / environmental awareness.
  • Motivation of others / coaching & mentoring.
  • Relationship building.

Candidates must be eligible to live and work in the UK.
