Job Description

The Tree Council is the national charity that brings everyone together for the love of trees. Now in our 50th year, we and our partners are helping tackle the climate and biodiversity emergencies and adding social value through planting and caring for trees and hedgerows with communities across the UK.

In August 2024, The Tree Council was appointed to deliver National Highways’ ambitious new programme to establish 3 million trees across England over the next five planting seasons, with the first phase to 31 March 2025. SP Energy Networks have also confirmed a four-year partnership to plant with communities in central and Southern Scotland. These two new programmes complement our ongoing, multi-award-winning programme with Network Rail, which has already established more than 350,000 trees in 180 communities since 2020 as well as ‘Branching Out’, our programme of small grants available for local communities.

We’re looking for a Communications Manager who can hit the ground running to develop (and start to deliver) a communications plan for the programmes, working with our key stakeholders - National Highways, Network Rail and SP Energy Networks. It will be important to help these partners meet their communications objectives as well as meeting our own.

The successful candidate will have the skills to identify compelling stories for different channels and audiences and to prepare case studies for a targeted selection of the 80 or so planting projects that will take place between November - March.

Working alongside The Tree Council’s wider communications team, you will draft media releases, plan launch events, attend planting days, advise local groups on how to promote their projects locally, develop marketing collateral and commission tree planting guidance/training materials to support all our community planting programmes.

You must possess excellent people skills to liaise with the wide range of stakeholders and be inspired by the idea of working in the environment/conservation sector as a member of The Tree Council's highly motivated and friendly team on these nationally significant programmes.

You will have a minimum three years’ experience managing communications for a complex project/programme with multiple stakeholders and audiences. Ideally you will demonstrate an understanding of community engagement and the national picture of tree planting.

ROLE PURPOSE:

Support The Tree Council to share the stories and communicate the social and environmental impact of this exciting new, multi-partner, community tree planting programmes.

Build strong, positive relationships with stakeholder communications teams so that the programmes continues longer-term.
