Job Location: Norfolk, VA
Shift: ALL
Security Clearance: No Clearance Required
Rate of Pay: $26.00 per hour (No per diem available)

DESCRIPTION:

We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Pipe Shop for J3 to J4 Pipefitters (15 positions) located in Norfolk, Virginia. Come be part of the vital work we do in shipbuilding and repair.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE:

Pipefitters are responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with specifications, with safety, quality, and professionalism as the top priorities.

POSITION DEMANDS:
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Basic stick ruler measurements.
  • Knowledge of hand tools and testing equipment.
  • Ability to work with general supervision and complete small tasks independently.
  • Knowledge of testing and obstructed flows.
  • Experience installing pipe hangers (Type 1 and Type 2).
  • Torch safety knowledge.
  • Basic blanking and tagging knowledge.
  • Understanding of ship design and layout.
  • Familiarity with Work Authorization Forms (WAFs).
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and competent person tickets.

GUIDELINES FOR PIPEFITTER:

JOURNEYPERSON 4 (Pipefitter):
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints/sketches and install all piping systems aboard ships.
  • Perform shop prefab on piping systems using sketches/templates developed from blueprints and ship check.
  • Understand and follow tag-out procedures for piping systems, ensuring safe work according to the Work Authorization Form (WAF).
  • Proficient in sil-brazing (Grades 3, 4, and 5).
  • Knowledgeable about pipe bending, either manually or with a machine, avoiding contortion.
  • Familiar with P-1 and Level 1 piping systems.
  • Ability to hydrostatic test piping systems.
  • Ability to install mechanically attached fittings, thread piping, and tap holes to proper sizes.
  • Prepare piping for welding using grinders or beveling machines.
  • Install pipe hangers/supports as per applicable hanger drawings.
  • Knowledgeable about various pipe and fitting materials and their proper application, in accordance with MIL-STD-777.
  • Proficient in the proper fitting of flanged joints, including gaskets and fasteners.
  • Knowledge of hot work and the ability to set up and perform hot water flushing on sil-braze piping systems.

JOURNEYPERSON 3 (Pipefitter):
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints/sketches and install piping systems with limited supervision.
  • Perform shop prefab on piping systems using sketches/templates developed from blueprints and ship check.
  • Understand and follow tag-out procedures for piping systems and ensure safe work according to the WAF.
  • Proficient in pipe bending, either manually or by machine, excluding mandrel type, using templates and sketches.
  • Familiar with P-1 and Level 1 piping systems.
  • Ability to hydrostatic test piping systems using approved hydro procedures.
  • Install mechanically attached fittings, thread piping, and tap holes to proper sizes.
  • Prepare piping for welding using grinders or beveling machines and fit/install backing rings, EB rings.
  • Install pipe hangers/supports as per applicable hanger drawings.
  • Knowledge of various types of pipe and fitting materials and their proper application, in accordance with MIL-STD-777.
  • Proficient in the proper fitting of flanged joints, including gaskets and fasteners.
  • Knowledge of hot work and the ability to set up and perform hot water flushing on sil-braze piping systems.
  • Capable of sil-brazing (Grade 3).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Carrying, lifting, walking, climbing, pulling, crawling, crouching, kneeling, stooping, and talking.
  • Must be able to go on vessels.
  • Must pass a Standard Jaeger's Test chart for near vision acuity reading J1 letters or equivalent with or without corrective aids and pass a color vision test using Ishihara's Tests for Color Deficiency.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensure the work environment is safe for hot work and that requirements of the hot work ticket are met.
  • Verify that the work environment has not changed since the ticket was written (e.g., fuel run back, unsafe conditions).
  • Confirm that a WAF ticket is on-site and specific to the job before work begins.
  • Address other safety issues related to the specific job, including staging, protective gear, and proper equipment use.
  • Ensure adherence to Hutco's Safety Procedures for all torch work.
  • Lead personnel to work safely and productively, while maintaining quality control.
  • Ensure proper fire watch and 30-minute cool-down period after hot work.
  • Ensure that the job site is left clean and safe before departure.
