The Opportunity
Our client undertakes a vital role in ensuring the design integrity and justification for safety of the key defence infrastructure; systems, structures and components (SSC) that interface with submarine Nuclear Propulsion (NP) and Nuclear Weapon (NW) systems. The SSC naval base support the operational deployment of the United Kingdom’s Strategic Nuclear. Due to this, they are currently searching for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join their ambitious and dynamic team.

Your duties and responsibilities will be
* As the Mechanical Engineer you will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team within the Approving Authority, the primary purpose of the role is to directly support current operations and future programmes. Supporting nuclear facilities & the delivery of services across Scottish sites.
* The team consists of Mechanical, Civil, Building Services or Electrical Engineers and are responsible for the authorship, development, assessment, and maintenance of Engineering Design Substantiation for site Nuclear Facilities, ensuring Design Intent, Critical Safety Functions and Safety and Operational Requirements are met and are consistent with current good practice and legislative/regulatory requirements.
* An experienced Mechanical Engineer is required to support the technical capability for a naval base in Scotland. This role will be suited to engineers with experience in Mechanical Design, although candidates experienced in Mechanical Installation or Maintenance are also welcomed.
* Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of the Nuclear Infrastructure Design Substantiation documents.
* Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of design changes/concessions
* Presentation of site Design substantiations, to site ‘Due Process’ nuclear safety committees.
* Production and development of Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) Schedule, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case through life.
* Producing/assessing Periodic Review of Safety reports.
* Providing advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders.
* Production of Independent Technical Review (ITA)/Independent Peer Review (IPR).
* Use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology.
* Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and re-cycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear/high risk environment.
* Producing robust technical justification to allow for relevant mechanical design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry.
You will have the following qualifications and experience
* Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the design assessment of Mechanical systems to withstand static and dynamic loads.
* Broad experience in mechanical engineering, preferably with experience of some of the following Mechanical systems; Pump systems, cranes, heating ventilation & air conditioning (HVAC), pressure systems and Diesel Generators.
* Experience of producing robust technical justification to allow for relevant mechanical design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry.
* Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and re-cycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear/high risk environment.
* Use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology.
* Ability to provide practical, creative and cost-effective solutions for design changes / modifications of plant and supporting Infrastructure.
* A good understanding of British and international design standards.
* A track record of making intelligent evidence- based decisions using various sources of data.
* Good skills in verbal and written communication.
* The ability to effectively manage and prioritise your own workload.
* Mechanical Engineering degree.
* Incorporated engineer (or equivalent experience).
* Detailed knowledge of the Design Intent for Mechanical Infrastructure in the nuclear industry or similar high hazard industry.
It's great if you also have the following
* Ideal candidates would already have experience within naval sites or a similar nuclear environment, but this is not essential.
* Familiarity with safety case development techniques e.g. HAZID/HAZOP studies.
* Chartered engineer (or equivalent experience).
