We are proud to offer an opportunity tailored for British Veterans who bring invaluable experience in safety, discipline, and leadership. We are looking for a dedicated Deputy Fire Officer to join our Estates and Facilities team. This role is vital in ensuring the safety and security of our campus community through rigorous fire safety management.

Overall Purpose of the Job:

As a Deputy Fire Officer, you will leverage your military experience to oversee structural fire safety and manage its maintenance, working closely with the Principal Fire Officer. Your role will ensure full statutory compliance while supporting fire safety strategy and the Facilities Management and Compliance (FMC) service goals. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting staff in fulfilling their structural fire safety duties.
  • Advising on fire safety protocols, including training, evacuation drills, and Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs).
  • Acting as the main point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including the Fire and Rescue Services.
  • Providing technical fire safety guidance in line with protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational:

  • Utilise your expertise to advise staff and tenants on meeting statutory fire safety requirements.
  • Maintain strong communication with Local Authorities and Fire and Rescue Services, ensuring that premises comply with all regulations.
  • Offer strategic guidance to design teams on fire safety measures during building and engineering projects, ensuring all work aligns with legal standards.
  • Keep meticulous records of fire safety matters, including Fire Risk Assessments and firefighting equipment, and develop effective databases and archives.
  • Conduct thorough fire investigations as required.
  • Collaborate with maintenance services on specialist contracts, such as those for fire alarms and suppression systems, and manage these contracts where necessary.
  • Work with the Principal Building Surveyor to develop and implement fire strategies that inform future maintenance planning and condition surveys.

Development:

  • Support the Principal Fire Officer in developing and refining fire safety strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Foster positive relationships with colleagues, suppliers, and professional associates to drive continuous improvement in operations and services.
  • Encourage a culture of continuous improvement within daily activities and across the institution.
  • Participate in budget setting, ensuring the cost-effective provision of fire safety services and contract management.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to effectively step in for the Principal Fire Officer when needed.

General:

  • Ensure all actions are in line with environmental sustainability goals.
  • Adhere to policies, including those related to Health & Safety, Equality Diversity and Inclusion, and Information Governance.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • Diploma (or equivalent) in Fire Safety.
  • Extensive experience providing fire safety advice on development and maintenance projects.
  • Previous experience in a fire prevention or development role within the Fire Service, with a thorough understanding of fire safety legislation, Part B of the Building Regulations, and other relevant laws.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

  • Membership of the Institution of Fire Engineers (MIFireE).
  • Health and Safety qualification (e.g., NEBOSH Certificate).
  • Trainer-training qualification or extensive experience in training others.
  • Awareness of environmental sustainability practices in the workplace.
  • Understanding of Health & Safety, Equality Diversity and Inclusion, and Information Governance in a workplace setting.
