Job Description

Location - Gloucester

Exciting role for a Quantity Surveyor in Gloucester, managing the commercial and contractual aspects of capital projects. You’ll review contracts, manage cost reporting, and work with project teams to ensure financial accountability and project success.

As the Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for overseeing and ensuring the timely and accurate contract reporting for all Capital Projects delivered by our client. This includes managing Commercial Controls and Contract Reporting within the Capital Projects division and offering guidance and support to the Operations Team in the areas of Commercial, Contractual, and Financial Management.

Duties and Responsibilities

Contract Administration

  • Validate costs at Tender Handover and during Contract Review.
  • Thoroughly review contract conditions to identify potential impacts on the commercial status of projects, and communicate key risks and guidelines to the project delivery team.
  • Review and provide feedback on new contracts, facilitate legal acceptance of terms and conditions, and negotiate improved terms.
  • Inform the project delivery team of contractual obligations and conditions affecting project delivery.
  • Ensure strict adherence to company policies and procedures in managing commercial aspects with Clients and Sub-Contractors, including payment schedules, applications, certifications, variations, and contract notices.
  • Vet Client and Sub-Contractor variations and site instructions, loading approved items into the Cost Control System promptly.
  • Manage commercial relationships with Clients and produce monthly cost control reports for project teams, ensuring accuracy and accountability.
  • Challenge non-recoverable costs by investigating causes and solutions.

Project Performance/Management

  • Review and distribute Project Actuals to Project Managers.
  • Attend monthly project review meetings and compile relevant information within set timelines.
  • Assess applications for payment against project costs.
  • Continuously monitor projected costs versus budgets in collaboration with Project Managers, Contract Directors, and the Commercial Director.
  • Ensure that project variations are issued in accordance with company standards.
  • Monitor and scrutinize project expenditures for accuracy.
  • Provide accurate forecasts of project costs through to completion and final account.
  • Create detailed monthly Project Reports for the senior leadership team, covering all Capital Projects for the GBEC Group, complete with supporting data and key metrics.

Project Completion/Handover

  • Conduct Project Gross Margin/Cost reviews.
  • Perform a commercial evaluation of all projects post-completion.
  • Maintain accurate records of all retentions for both customers and suppliers, ensuring timely release of retentions and minimizing overdue amounts.

Person Specification

Essential

  • In-depth knowledge of construction-specific contract forms.
  • Significant experience in quantity surveying within a relevant business environment.
  • Strong understanding of contracts, particularly JCT and NEC, and their administration.
  • Robust general contractual and commercial knowledge.
  • Experience in a senior position, with strong commercial management and project experience.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with customers, suppliers, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines, multitask, and maintain a process-driven approach.
  • Highly result-oriented, with a strong drive to deliver and succeed.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Capability to work well both independently and as part of a team, including with members based in various locations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills across all levels.

Desirable

  • Membership in a relevant professional body and/or a relevant professional qualification, such as RICS, CIOB, RIBA, ICE, or CIBS.
  • Previous experience with Eque2 or similar systems.

Working Conditions


This position will primarily be located in Gloucester. However, frequent travel to other offices and various site locations across the UK and Europe will be necessary. You will work closely and collaboratively with Project Managers, Contracts Directors, Contracts Managers, and the Group Purchasing team.
