The Role:

The Cluster Chief Engineer is a critical senior role, responsible for group-wide property & facilities statutory and safety compliance, reporting to the Regional Operations Manager with a dotted line to the Group Chief Engineer. They will provide support to hotel operations and properties for all aspects of property maintenance, including technical support, budgeting, management of central contracts, and for building fabric related Health & Safety.

  • Management of the cluster-wide planned preventative programme (PPM) for all planned, cyclical, and reactive maintenance (including statutory)
  • Constant review and feedback on all centralised contracts through regular documented review meetings
  • Manage centralised contracts ensuring costs are in line with budget
  • Ensure the cluster's reporting of maintenance budgets, including planned preventative and reactive maintenance (PPM) budgets with Cluster General Managers and Regional Operations Manager
  • Work closely with the other relevant property team functions to build and manage the 1, 3 and 5-year capital maintenance plans (management of the capital maintenance plan and projects lies with the Property team)
  • Manage and continue to develop the engineering governance and best practice guide through regular reviews and ensuring the documents are implemented and used
  • Ensure that hotels are compliant with statutory regulations (such as Water Quality, Fire Safety, Asbestos etc.) and therefore any suggested corrective work is actioned accordingly
  • Review, develop and direct statutory maintenance programmes ensuring equipment is maintained in compliance with relevant codes of practice and regulations, supporting hotels in dealing with enforcing authorities where required.
  • Working closely with the CHG internal procurement function and continue to jointly develop and manage regular competitive tendering plans for all third-party and in-house PPM, Quality and Maintenance suppliers
  • Manage on an ongoing basis, all central PPM, H&S, Quality and Maintenance suppliers and advisors, ensuring contract compliance in terms of service and commercials and acting as an escalation channel to the hotels as required.
  • Develop and manage the relationship with CHG's third party audit partner, also working in collaboration with the Group Risk and Compliance Team accordingly.
  • Assist where required in preparing monthly and quarterly reports for executive management on incidents relating to cluster facilities matters.
  • Provide technical and engineering advice and support to the Executive Committee, General Managers and hotel maintenance teams as required.
  • Provide support to the Cluster General Managers in ensuring the right teams and expertise are in place at hotel level (including involvement in organisational and resource decision-making).

  • Experienced in building the right teams, developing resources, talent, and career progression paths.
  • Demonstrable and proven experience of senior and supervisory Estate Management work across large-scale property portfolios.
  • Demonstrable and proven experience of working commercially, ‘client-side' and within the high-end Hospitality industry.
  • Demonstrable and proven track record of major incident management balancing both the operational and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong experience in H&S, risk assessment and safe systems of work, safe task design, working equipment and hazardous substances.
  • Demonstrable and proven experience in developing and promoting behavioural safety.
  • Demonstrable and proven experience in policy development, implementation and review, process development, legislative compliance.
  • Demonstrable and proven experience in analysing audit and management information e.g. analytical tools / systems development and data analysis, performance monitoring and reporting.
  • NEBOSH / IOSH H&S qualifications advantageous
