Job Title: Associate / Senior Associate – Shipping Disputes

Overview:


Our client, a leading international law firm with a global reputation in Shipping and Marine law, is seeking a Shipping Disputes Associate or Senior Associate to join its team in London. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a team that is highly regarded for its expertise in charter party disputes and cargo recovery, providing services to some of the world’s largest shipping companies, insurers, and commodity traders.


You will handle complex, high-value cases and work alongside leading practitioners in the field. The firm’s global reach, sector expertise, and collaborative work environment make this an excellent role for lawyers looking to advance their careers in maritime disputes.


Key Responsibilities


  • Advising on charter party disputes, including issues related to breach of charter terms, performance warranties, off-hire disputes, demurrage claims, and vessel unseaworthiness.
  • Acting on cargo recovery cases, representing cargo owners and insurers in claims for loss or damage to cargo, as well as advising on cargo lien, subrogation, and general average issues.
  • Drafting, negotiating, and advising on shipping contracts, including charter party agreements, bills of lading, and sale and purchase contracts.
  • Representing clients in litigation and arbitration, handling all stages from initial advice through to hearings, settlements, and appeals.
  • Collaborating with other teams across the firm on multi-jurisdictional disputes and international arbitration, particularly in emerging markets.
  • Advising on maritime law issues such as vessel detentions, sanctions, and piracy-related matters.


Key Requirements


  • 3+ years post-qualification experience (PQE) in shipping law, gained at a recognised law firm.
  • Experience handling charter party disputes, cargo recovery, and other maritime-related disputes.
  • Strong technical skills and a solid understanding of shipping contracts, particularly charter parties and bills of lading.
  • Experience with arbitration and litigation, ideally with exposure to international cases and cross-border disputes.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build and maintain strong client relationships.
  • A proactive approach to case management, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
