Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Structural Engineer to join our well-established Dorset based office in Poole. You will be working across a range of sectors including educational, residential and commercial, from scheme concept through to detailed design and construction monitoring. Our projects are predominantly located throughout the south of England and London.


Summary Job Description:

We are looking for a Structural Engineer to join our existing team, who will be capable of working with minimal supervision and, able to supervise and support junior members of the design team in a full-time, permanent role. Monday to Friday, typically 9am to 5:30pm (37.5 hour week). You would need to reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting this role.


The responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Working within a design team providing technical design best practice with other engineers, architects and contractors for building projects.
  • Being responsible for the production of technical design information including drawings, calculations, specifications and reports
  • Liaising effectively with clients, local authorities and other design team members
  • Undertaking the project management and financial control on a range of projects
  • Assisting in the preparation of bids and fee proposals
  • Mentoring junior staff
  • Developing business with new and existing clients


What are we looking for in you?

  • Preferably Chartered Engineer (or Associate/Incorporated Engineer) or a minimum 5 years relevant experience and working towards professional status
  • Experience in leading and managing small teams, delegating and supervising work of team members and acting as a mentor for junior members to develop their technical skills
  • Experience in liaising with clients, associated professionals and other disciplines team members on all relevant aspects of projects
  • Experience of designing in all the primary construction materials; steel, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber and able to evaluate the advantages and disadvantage of the use of these materials for specific projects
  • Experience of carrying out structural appraisals on buildings and producing written reports, including for basement impact assessments, listed building applications and house purchases
  • Competent in using a variety of methods of analysis and media, including traditional hand calculations and computer analysis using proprietary software, to solve structural engineering problems
  • Knowledge, use of and review of appropriate Eurocodes, British Standards and specifications and applying these to the structural design of projects
  • Knowledge and experience of construction techniques, construction plant and machinery, temporary support systems, construction programming and sequencing – ideally having had a period of site experience on one or more construction projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good understanding of the CDM 2015 Regulations
  • Able to assist during construction stage, including site inspections
  • Experience in working in new development projects and/or existing buildings
