Job Description

Liberty Steel Group have an opportunity for an experienced Process Control Technician to join our Team at our Stocksbridge site, supporting the efficient operation of the electrical function of the team.

The Role

Predominantly the role holder is required to:

  • Undertake reactive, preventative maintenance and calibration services to a wide range of combustion/instrumentation control systems in a modern steel production facility.
  • Work independently on faults and develop and implement solutions as well as monitor performance, prediction of failures and implement improvements to increase safety, production output and plant reliability.
  • Assist in the efficient planning and running of the process control function through following routine planned maintenance schedules, quality assurance and the coordination of responses to breakdowns.


Principal Accountabilities of the Process Control Technician

  • To undertake the maintenance and quality assurance procedures for the process control equipment and plant across the Stocksbridge site to ensure activities carried out are consistent with all relevant procedures, legislation, standards, and performance targets.
  • To comply with both company policy, and statutory Health, Safety and Environmental legislation.
  • Contribute to the team's continuous improvement of plant and equipment, to implement and identify improvements, assisting other areas of the department as and when necessary.
  • To maintain asset availability and efficiency through planned and reactive maintenance activities, considering the company asset management framework (CAMF) / statutory responsibilities, plant histories, fault finding, delay analyses and using own knowledge of process, and plant.
  • Support the training and development of themselves and others, including Technicians, Graduates, and Apprentices to ensure the team achieve their full working potential.
  • Participate and contribute toward investigations, including failure identification and root cause investigations, evaluating, and selecting technical options, with suggested recommendations to support both the resolution of problems and engineering improvements.
  • Support the operations of the wider Department to achieve business targets and standards.
  • Attend meetings as required to assist in the management of energy, engineering planning, efficiency improvements, and process safety.
  • Create reports, records, and feedback on relevant Maintenance Management systems.
  • Assist with the management of contractors.
  • Assist with the development and installation of capital projects and equipment.

Requirements

We require the Process Control Technician to be an individual who is self-starting and self-motivated and is committed to the pursuit of objectives and business goals. They should also

  • Have good analytical skills and the ability to assimilate, organise and analyse pertinent information for logic-based problem solving.
  • Be able to meet deadlines, communicate in a clear concise manner, clearly and directly, making effective use of communication technology.
  • Be highly computer literate.
  • Have the capability to become familiar with new equipment, systems, and technologies through close contact with engineers, suppliers, manufacturers and the study of technical literature, manuals, and specific training courses.
  • Be a team worker, with a flexible approach to work, be sensitive to external and internal customer needs and awareness of the benefits of good customer service to meet the expectations/requirements of customers.
  • Be responsible for the health and safety of themselves and others working in the team.

Essential Skills & Experience Required

  • Hold a recognised Electrical / Process Control apprenticeship (HNC/ONC level or equivalent)
  • Previous Instrumentation / Control / Electrical experience of industrial systems
  • A Demonstratable ability to learn new skills.
  • Good level of problem-solving awareness.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical drawings and work with technical data.
  • A good understanding and knowledge of Health Safety Legislation with experience of adhering to SWP's, risk assessments, procedures, and permit systems.
  • Previous use of a variety of computerised maintenance management systems and other computerised tools which are regularly used in a busy Engineering function.

Desirable Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience of furnace combustion systems, air / gas ratio control, PID control for burner systems and thermocouples. A good working knowledge of current Health and Safety Legislation relating to combustion systems would also be advantageous.
  • Experience of a wide range of measurement and instrumentation methods and equipment.
  • Calibration of instrumentation to recognised standards such as NADCAP AMS2750, AS9100.
  • Experience of electronics including fault finding and repair to component level.
  • Experience of PC based systems and their associated communications.
  • Experience of CCTV and audio communications systems.
  • A knowledge of PLC and SCADA based systems predominantly related to fault finding would be advantageous.
  • Experience of written reporting for detailing activities, plant maintenance and reliability.
  • Experience of planning of work schedules and reporting of daily / weekly jobs.
  • Competence in the latest I.E.T. Wiring Regulations.
  • Experience of working in confined spaces and at heights would be advantageous.
  • Experience of environmental monitoring equipment and ISO 14001 standards.
  • Experience of Quality Management Systems e.g ISO9001

The Process Control Technician role is a day's role with some weekend work on a rota basis. Further details can be provided if required.
