Can you do it?In this newly created role, you will be supporting the growth of the UK Biobank laboratory as we bring in brand new automated ultra-low temperature freezers to hold 20 million biological samples and enable more efficient sample access for our researchers. This role will be involved in all aspects of the implementation of our new automated freezers and throughout the process will develop expertise in the operation of the freezers to support laboratory operations. This is an ideal role for someone looking to grow in a business and be involved in an exciting transformation.

The key responsibilities are;
  • Providing Subject Matter Expertise to support laboratory operations
    • Developing and maintaining an understanding of all aspects of the Hamilton BiOS (automated ultra-low temperature freezer)
    • Working with laboratory team to develop and maintain an understanding of the expected duration to complete tasks; e.g. time and motion studies
    • Delivering training to laboratory users
  • Monitoring performance of Automation for Storage and Picking
    • Understanding performance Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and give operational context to their interpretation as part of monthly contract management discussions
  • Optimising use of Automation for Storage and Picking to maximise efficiency
    • Inputting to development and maintenance of a strategy to maintain an optimised sample distribution
    • Ensuring operational delivery
  • Supporting identification and implementation of new or improved Automation
    • Identify opportunities to improve solutions and workflows
    • Support commissioning of automated storage and picking solutions including Factory or Site Acceptance Testing
  • Managing documentation related to Standard Operating Procedures
    • Training materials
    • Health and Safety documentation

Working hours are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, split between office and laboratory (based in Cheadle, Stockport, until 2026 when we move to Manchester Science Park) based activities with the expectation of hybrid working if and when required.
Is this 'you'?Reporting to the Laboratory Research and Development Specialist youll have experience in;
  • Working with automation (e.g. laboratory, manufacturing)
  • Working with technical experts such as engineers
  • Aptitude and interest in IT and data Microsoft programs (particularly Excel), reporting tools (e.g. PowerBI), use of software to operate equipment
  • Excellent communication across range of stakeholders
  • Collaborative attitude
  • Desire to drive change and improvement
  • Enjoys understanding how things work
