Mental Health Practitioner (Early Days In Custody)


Location: Wandsworth HMP Wandsworth

Contract Type: Permanent

Hours: Full time, 37.5 hours per week (Long days 3-4 days per week 07:30-20:30)

Salary: £42,939-£50,697 per annum, dependent on experience

An exciting opportunity has arisen for Band 6 Senior Practitioners to join the Mental Health team at HMP Wandsworth contributing to the Mental Health team delivery at HMP Wandsworth.


What will you be doing?


The post holder will be an expert practitioner, and a source of expert advice to the Primary Care team, Substance Misuse team, Prison staff, and Offenders. With overall responsibility for the mental and physical health and well-being of offenders in their care; operational management and day-to-day leadership of the In-reach team at HMP Wandsworth


  • You will ensure that new prisoners are supported during their first 14 days in the prison to access relevant healthcare offers and manage their general health and wellbeing whilst in prison
  • Identify the wider needs of patients, through the completion of a comprehensive assessment and working in partnership with them to co-produce a written care plan that addresses their health and social care needs
  • Collect and synthesize all relevant clinical history to ensure safety, continuity of care and minimal re-assessments for the patient and ensuring that the records held for patients are up to date and accurate
  • Ensure ongoing care for every person requiring it, with clear pathway management in place that is understood by the patient and their families /significant others


Oxleas is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified RMN with experience in any of the following areas:


Learning Disability

Personality Disorder

Substance Misuse/Dual Diagnosis

Mentally Disordered Offenders


What do you need?


  • NMC Registration
  • Degree supplemented by diploma, specialist training
  • Minimum of 2 years post qualification as an RMN
  • Extensive clinical experience
  • Supervisory experience of junior staff and students
