STFC supports UK technology start-ups and SMEs through various Business Incubation activities, designed to foster innovation and growth.

STFC's Business Incubation team operate a portfolio of support for start-ups and early-stage companies which includes accommodation, facilities and technical expertise as well as incubation programmes. The incubation activities provide support to de-risk the early journey of the technology business.

Our flagship incubation programme, the Business Incubation Centre (BIC), is one of the UK's most active start-up incubators. This programme supports technology start-ups in the fields of Biology, Space, Digital and Quantum. It provides start-ups with grant funding, commercial coaching, and access to specialist technical expertise and facilities.

In addition, the incubation team offer unique support to start-ups and SMEs to de-risk innovation; with state-of-the-art laboratories, business support, access to finance, and technical expertise in areas such as 3D printing, VR/AR, 5G, IoT, and other scientific fields, STFC Daresbury offers a unique business ecosystem where cooperation, collaboration, and business development support is key for the development of the economy.

About the role

This exciting and dynamic role involves working closely with technology start-ups and SMEs on campus to support them on their innovation journey. You will play a key role in the Daresbury Incubation team, supporting small businesses and ensuring key targets and outputs are met. You will be a vital part of a dynamic team driving innovation and economic development in the UK's technology sector.

Your role as Graduate Business Engagement Co-ordinator will involve:
  • Incubation Management: Lead and manage the delivery of structured business support to technology start-ups and SMEs at the Daresbury Campus. You will support the team to ensure that targets and outputs are achieved, driving innovation and business growth within the incubator.
  • Relationship Building: Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal technology departments, including the Campus Technology Hub (CTH), the Hartree Centre, Innovations Technology Access Centre (ITAC labs) and our operational teams. Facilitate seamless integration and collaboration between these departments and the start-ups and SMEs within the incubation structure.
  • Coordination: Coordinate and ensure services and support are delivered on time and in full to clients.
  • Client Engagement: Serve as the primary point of contact for start-ups and SMEs who want to use our facilities, managing relationships and ensuring they receive the full spectrum of support needed to succeed.
  • Business Development: Work closely with the Business Engagement Manager to develop a pipeline of opportunities for our incubation laboratories and our technical facilities and developing those prospects through to client relationships. Working closely with the marketing team to coordinate impact collection and reporting.
  • Location and Travel: The role is primarily based at the Daresbury Laboratory Campus in Warrington, with occasional travel within the UK and potentially abroad to support business development activities.

About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities

Key responsibilities:
  • Support the Business Engagement Manager in ensuring a high-quality pipeline of prospects for incubation laboratories (ITAC) and technical facilities (CTH) and supporting them in prospect qualification. Organise meetings with companies to capture their requirements.
  • Support the Business Engagement Team in developing client relationships and ensuring that our clients fully exploit the technical and business support available to them.
  • Act as a contact for clients with internal teams and departments to ensure services are delivered as per contract.
  • Generate a regular flow of high-quality content (case studies, blogs, position papers) to support the marketing and promotion of the business incubation.
  • Plan, organise and run events in support of business incubation at STFC and Sci-Tech Daresbury.
  • Represent STFC business incubation at relevant industry events - trade shows, conferences etc.
  • Keep abreast of developments within the regional innovation ecosystem on funding and initiatives to benefit our SME's.
