STFC's Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) mission is to build the 'Big Science' facilities of the future; we design, build, and operate particle accelerators and make major contributions to many of the biggest projects in the world today. Based at Daresbury Laboratory, we work with high-profile national and international partners that include the Cockcroft Institute.

As a member of the Femtosecond Lasers and Timing (FLT) Group, you will learn to use electronic and optical systems to control particle beams in time with outstanding precision. Your work will help realise important developments at major facilities, where charged particles, lasers and x-rays are combined together for scientific advancement.

About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities

  • Alignment and installation of optoelectronic and fibre optic components for temporal synchronisation within particle accelerator environments
  • Performing experiments and prototyping within ASTeC's new Accelerator Timing and Laser and Synchronisation (ATLAS) Laboratory, based at Daresbury Laboratory



To apply for this graduate opportunity, we are looking for the following:

Key: Shortlisting (S), Interview (I), both Shortlisting and Interview (S&I)

Essential:

  • Achieved, or be on course to achieve, a minimum 2:1 degree, in a relevant field of study (S)
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK at time of starting employment (S)
  • Knowledge and curiosity about analogue, digital and mixed signal electronics (S&I)
  • Evidence of a practical approach to problem solving (S&I)
  • Show care and attention to detail, demonstrated in laboratory activities (I)
  • Technical computer programming skills, e.g. Python, C/C++, for hardware control (S&I)
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts concisely and with impact to various audiences (S&I)


Desirable:

  • Technical understanding and/or practical experience of (e.g.) optics, laser systems, photonics, optoelectronics (S&I)
  • Knowledge, experience and passion for particle accelerator technology (S&I)
